My very first game that I played, I was Egypt -- because that was my favorite from CivIII. I played on Settler, and it was a cakewalk.

My second game I played as Frederick of Germany (call it an ethnic weakness). I was delighted with the results -- at last I could win a game playing as Germany -- something that I could rarely do in CivIII.

I quickly progressed to the Noble level and am trying to play each of the leaders a couple of times -- easiest way to learn the strengths and weaknesses of all of them. However, I find that I am completely hooked on having a Creative civ and getting those 2 culture / turn.

So here's the question: How do you manage to get enough culture to stay alive and expand during the early game if you are playing a non-Creative civ?

I usually do it by chopping a forest for an obelisk, at least if I dont have a religion yet. Later if you have cast system just use an artist for 3 turns to get past the 10 culture needed for the first border expansion.

that is a really good idea, I should start doing that.

There are several good ways to get 10 culture and expand border.
1. Creative.
2. Spread state religion.
3. Stonehedge.
4. Library or temple or whatever buidling to generate culture.
5. Caste system and artist.

The merits of creative trait are:
1. Alllow you to ignore the whole religion thing in the early ages.
2. Fast colloseum and theatre make culture slider much more useful to maintain people happy, especially in war time.

Conclusion: creative is great for warmonger!

I have the same problem but in my case it's the Spiritual trait. I've gotten so used to being able to change religions and civics whenever it suits me that I can't stand the thought of having to actually undergo 1 turn of anarchy

i believe its industrial that gives you half off on buildings, or is it just wonders?

with that you can easily capture the early wonders, specially stonehenge.. which besides all their side benifits, also act as culture magnets... i also race for at least one religion of my own so that i can use the bonus's a state religion gives.

not sure how financial could be used for this exept in later game.. but otherwise...

those are my favorite two.. which besides the fact that im related to him, roosevelt is my favorite one to play.. afterall.. she who has the most gold can buy the best toys :)
