Rome: Roman Legion defeats both Crusaders.

Why did we place both Crusaders at the same square?

If we had spread them out we would have lost only one and the other could easily have taken Viroconium. We would then have aquired Astronomy to our SSC and the Romans would probably have signed peace with us.

Crusaders only have a defense of 1. If you're going to use them to attack you need a defensive unit too for any possible counterattacks, such as a rush-built legion.

the first crusader attacked the city and won, the second repeated, but there were 3 more roman units outside the city, so both would have died anyways

Thanks for the info, Knas. How sad.

I was thinking we should put a pikeman in but we only had one trireme.

It was originally send just to scout, but en route we decided in chat to attack virconuim.

WHICH IS WHY WE NEED MORE SHIPS!!!

Defensive units would just turn our offense slow, expensive and, believe me, no
matter what we do, inefficient. I know it sounds twisted logic, but anybody who has played
Emperor, knows what I mean.

In this phase of the game most AI cities have a garrison of only two or three units. Next time we attack I suggest we send two ships with a total of four crusaders. We will then be able to take our target city in the first turn. Once the AI loses a city it almost always sues for peace and we can build/ship in defensive units. :)
