How did I lose?

I just got Civ V and it is my first time playing any Civ.

Have racked up 70 hours already. Won a single game against AIs.

Played yesterday and at turn 485 I got the "You lose" message come up. Looked at the demographics and I ranked number "1" in every category except for 2 and I was 2nd and 3rd in those.

How did I lose? The game does not seem to tell you who won and how? Or am I missing something?

Thanks

Probably a diplomatic victory

Yes probably but what I was really getting at is, is there somewhere in the game to find out who won and how?

When the UN is built you get a message saying that, and there is a countdown clock on the civs tab that starts at 10 and works its way down. The vote happens then, and if they have the most votes then they win the game

If they have TEN votes they win the game. (If you have 10 votes, you win the game.) Having the most votes doesn't do it if it's less than 10.

EDIT: That's on a large map. On different sized maps it's probably a different number.

SECOND EDIT: In the upper right-hand corner, one of the things you can click brings up a list of things you can reference. One of those is victory progress. If you look at that periodically, you'll see how many players still have their capitals, who has built the Apollo Program, who has completed how many policy trees, and whether the UN has been built and how many votes you have. Following that can help prevent nasty surprises. I had the same thing happen earlier today, but I knew it was diplomatic because I saw when we voted that someone had 17 votes.

Yes I have had the UN vote before and that is not what happened in this game.

A screen just appeared saying something like "you have been defeated" and giving me the option of "just one more turn...."

This screen seems to appear whenever you get defeated but my question is, is there anywhere you can see who defeated you and how you were defeated?

Yes, click the "just one more turn" button. Then you can check the victory progress screen to see which civ won. Top right of the screen there is a little drop down arrow that with extra information panels (one being victory progress).

Did you check the victory screen? It should list the progress of the other civs towards the various victory condition.

OK great. Thanks for that.

sounds like a Cultral Victory...

click on the right hand report above the Victory/Defeat picture, and it will give you a list of your victories/defeats and who won the defeats, and in what way.

if I have an AI civ with 3 or less cities, I always keep an eye on it, as it's often going for a cultural victory.

what about time victory? I always turn this off in my games.. Not sure what year it ends at.
