How did you become interested in Civilization?

I kept seeing Civ 2 in Walmart for $10. And on one vacation to Brainerd, MN, I broke down and bought it. Then I found this site and bought Civ 3 Gold, couldn't play it on my old computer, bought and installed Civ 3 Vanilla and played that forever. Then early last year I bought Civ 3 Complete and played that all year (downloading all the kicka$$ scenarios and that here), I played that game "too much" according to my friends. Then for some reason I uninstalled it, and now it won't reinstall. Something about a file missing on the final CD, and the install goes no further. I emailed the company 7-9 months ago, and have yet to hear back.

I was a little PO'ed at them, but I gained an apathy about it until a little while ago. When I tried to buy Conquest off of Ebay. They didn't have the US version. Not all that much of a problem, but I'm too lazy to deal with it.

But I could never stand AOI or TCW. Yuck!!! :thumbdown :shake: :vomit:

Spoiler :
JUST KIDDING, THEY'RE GREAT!!!
:goodjob: :woohoo:

so you still haven't been able to get c3c running again? even after a complete re-install?
It won't get past some file (I think it was for some horse archer or something) on the Third CD, and without that one freakin file, it puts the kibosh on the whole install. I believe it may be some damage to the CD, but there is no visible damage at all. It won't even complete the installation much less let me start the game.

Yes, I know there can be damage without showing it.

You've got the lurker thing going on, you post without showing you're logged on.

Those two scenarios can be a little overwhelming at times, though. However they are incredibly detailed. I can't quite remember the Civilopedia, but I think it was complete, and that is a good indication that the creator spent A LOT of time on the scenario. And, as always, my useless info is available.

How did I get into Civilization? FREECIV!!!

I had Linux installed on my laptop to run some research software for my honours project. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to install any of it on the computer (at least in Linux, anyway). After I had resigned to installing the programs in Windows, I wondered what, if anything, I'd do with Linux. Until I discovered it had quite a few games...

I eventually found Freeciv and became instantly hooked. A couple of months later I heard that Freeciv was a freeware clone of Civ II (?). So I read up on the Civilization series and got myself Civ IV ...

Poor research project. It's been coming a distant second for some time now. Oh well, I'll start on my thesis soon.

BTW El J, you ever make any scenarios for the pathetic souls that are too stupid to properly protect their CD's (even though they did) and aren't well enough off fiscally to get Conquests?

Also, how's the new job looking?

not sure what you mean  i find your install problems to be weird. did you try seeing if anyone in the tech forum has any advice?

you can probably score a new copy of C3C off ebay for like 5 bucks...

i haven't started yet - i need to take a few certification exams first :) soon enough though :D next month...

and yes - i am indeed on 'lurker' mode :p

back on topic somewhat:
how many of you all have tried to extoll the beauty of our initial civ experiences upon our friends? i know i have for a few :)

I got this game a few years ago in Missouri when I was visiting family. I had 20$ and just had to spend it. So after scouring the gaming section of an electronic store, I whiteled it down to Civ3 and some other game. After much thought, I bought civ3. I took it back home (michigan) and played it a couple times and then set it aside. The pace was just to slow and the learning curve for this game was gigantic. At the time I was playing Age of Mythology (a RTS) and was quite content with that. In fact, I have been playing AoM since I got Civ3. But a few weeks ago, I quit AoM and am now looking for a substitute till spore comes out or until I get WoW, whichever comes first.

Not the nicest reason for finding Civ3, but a reason none the less.

A friend hosted a LAN party with Civ3 as the showcase game. The next day I went out and bought it for my very own. That was three years ago, and though I have Civ4 I'm still hunting for Civ3's expansions. :mischief:

My friend was playing it on his laptop at a swim meet and he showed me Civ 3. I bought Civ 3, C3C, and PTW, followed by civ 4. To make a long story short I got addicted and found this site. The rest is, quote, "history."

My mom was reading Times Magazine and inside happened to be an advertisment for Civ 3. What caught her eye was that they used Ganesha and she suggested that I could get it for Chrsitmas. I went online and read some info on it, and got hooked on it before I even played it. Eagerly played it the entire Christmas vacation, and was hooked for life. Got PTW shortly after, and C3C as well. And I got Civ 4 recently as well. I found this fourm many years ago during my Civ 3 days.

I don't understand this. What has Ganesha to do with Civ3? and why would it be a reason to give for Chrsitmas over it?

It is a strange problem, but I can try to boil it down more. I'm installing, then it says "File blahblahwhateverthenameis.??? not found" and the install will go no further, and will eventually ask me to restart the install.

I have tried to sway some people into my gaming habits, some took to it easily, some didn't.

How did I get into Civilization?
I tried to get my teacher gal to play axis and allies with me. When I pulled out all the pieces I got the blank stare....
So she bought me the computer version of "Risk"...which I dominated within weeks....I tried to get her to play the MP and of course I got the blank stare....
So I asked "so what are your students into for "strategy games"?
They said "civilization is "the awesomest" or "the bezwitch" or something kids say. :old:

So she got it for me and the rest is history. Now you folks are stuck with me and my friends ask how the Babylonians and Zulus are doing.

I asked a friend at work what she thought were some good PC games and she told me Civ2. I bought it and started to play it. Well I had a question about something so I asked her and she told me that she hadn't ever played it. That confused me a bit but I sitll love the game and have since moved on to the newer ones.

It turns out the guy that sits next to me at work is just as addicted as I am and I never would've guessed it.

What is your story of how you became interested in Civilization Series. 1, 2, 3, or 4?
I read the review for the Amiga version, august 1992. The initial Civ version is the only game that ever received as much as 99% in a review in the "Datormagazin" magazine.
I knew it was the game for me, but waited for the more advanced AGA version (for Amiga 1200/4000) to be released. I think this game was one of the many reasons why I bought an A4000.

I got the first part accidently by a pal back in 1994. First time i saw it i thought the settlers was a butterfly firing rockets and the next day i got the clue of the game. By that time I was 8. however it took me 6 mounths to know absolutely everything about the game (i didn't know english a word). When i realized all the catches i played the game 24 hours 7 days a week 3 years. Although i still got it i play noe C3C beacuse ofcourse it has better graphic but the best is with the trick with the resources.
VIVA CIVILIZATION !!!!!!!!!

I got the 1st one free from a friend and loved it.

I built my first computer to spec to play Civ3, buying it from discount bins before I even owned a computer.

Played the original in 1991. Used to skip classes to play it.. A lot... When when Civ2 came out, would take days off work to play that!!

My senior year of high school, 1997, I was introduced to Civ II by a good friend. We used to play at his house and obviously I had to get myself a copy of it. Been addicted ever since.
