How did you get started playing Civilization?

I think it was early 1992 when my best frien called me and said: "You should come over to my place cause I have something tyo show you. a computer game which actually requires thought to beat." I went over, got hooked in an hour, went to the store the same day and got hooked some more... It went downhill ever since...:)

I think it was 1997 when my friend told me about CIV 1:rolleyes:
Since then I've played CIV2,CIV3 and CTP1

I played Civ 1 on an IBM PS/1 with 2 MHz processor, 4 Mb RAM and 20 Mb HDD. Computers have never rocked more.

Some guy at school talked about a game where you could build railroads without knowing the Wheel (Civ1)....

I tried it, loved it - and am hooked ever since!

I think it was 1995 or 1996 - I was living as a beat un New Mexico, working part time at a video store. They let us have free rentals on older movies and games, and one night I rented some SNES games. One of them was Civilization. Boy, did the owners get mad when I didn't return the game for two weeks.

God, I'm old!!! I played Avalon Hill (board) war games in the late '60's and '70's - Stalingrad, Waterloo, Panzerblitz, etc. When PC's came on the scene, I started looking for a good computer strategy/war game with no success until I saw Civ on the shelf in about '92.

Been playing strategy games for - a long time.

Played boardgames of all sorts. Chess to a reasonable standard. Play bridge to a reasonable standard.

Played computer games since before the micro was invented.
Got into Civ1 Civ2 Civtot - didnt like CTP.
Like Moo Moo2, SMAc SMAX
Dont play much else but Civ3 on computer and bridge off it these days. Moo3 on order.

Hmm, good question. I must be getting old also, I don't remember the year (whatever year it came out) nor the type of machine I played it on (probably an early IBM but possibly a C-64/128). I've played Civ I, II and now of course III, Colonization, MOO, and a host of other strategy games both computer based and board based. Currently 'recovering' from a 3 year EQ addiction and trying to get back into turn-based strategy games.

I'd also like to second the idea for a sequel to Colonization, one of my favorites of the 'series.

edit:

LOL, realized I didn't actually answer the question - how did I get started. Like Wildbill (sp?), I played AH war games and looked for a decent computer alternative. Once I found Civ, I basically snatched up anything Sid Meier was involved in.

Wonderful thread.

My descent into madness started in first year of school (1995), when my next door neighbor lent me his laptop with Civ I on it. I spent a good 3 days hooked on it, barely leaving my room for food/drink.

I got Civ II for my roommate the next year (can you say 'the gift that keeps on giving?'), and played that a LOT as well, liking it much better than Civ I.

I recently got CivIII & PTW. I was afraid of what it would do to me, given my past history, but I gave in to my inner desires. :D

started in 1990 with pirated Civilization on the Amiga. copied the floppies from my cousin.
Later bought Colonization, Civ2, SMAC, SMAX, Civ3

still waiting for ptw

It must have been around 1991. My family was living in Greenland at the time, and my father frequently took business-trips. One day he brought home a present for my brother and me - a brand new game to play on our new 386 computer.

I remember it now 1 - 2 - 1 to start a game of civ. (we had no soundcard)

Ahh, yes...those were the magic keypunches. Used to have great fun playing as the germans on the Earth map, and going down to rub out the undefended Babylon with my starting settler.

I played on a 286 with a 12Mhz processor. It was on 2 5 1/4 floppy disks. I can still hear that opening song in my head.

I got started on Civ when my mom beta tested the original version. I played that and enjoyed it, and then I somehow got started on Civ 2. I made my entire family play along with all of my friends. When my family got the home network up and running a few years ago, we all started playing multiplayer Civ 2 games. Now I have Civ 3: PTW, but nobody in my family will let me convince them that anything can be better than Civ 2. I have no idea what I would rather be doing than playing Civ 3.

Even "Pirates!"? LOL. I enjoyed that one for quite a while. How about Zork? I actually took my wife out to dinner to celebrate solving the "Bell, Book, and Candle" puzzle. That was the day she realized she'd married a lunatic.

My first Civ experience was back in 1996. I was ten years old when my father copied Sim City 2000 and Civilization from my uncle. Everybody at home got hooked on SC2000 but I was the only to "understand" Civilization ;). My friends and I played Civ for hours on my P100 (I was the only kid on the block with Civ), when somebody introduced me to Colonization. Which still is a great game.

A few years later I borrowed Civ2 from the local library, installed it and it never left my hard-drive. Good thing Civ2 is playable without CD.

And exactly one year ago I bought part III and two weeks ago I bought PTW.

Half a year ago I also bought SMAC, but I haven't played is much, since Civ3 is way too addictive.

Back in the early 90's some Guys played Civ1 on the University-computer. I was immediatly fascinated by this Game. So when I bought my first PC some month's later I too bought my very first Computer-Game Civ1;

Since then I bought and played endless hours on Colonisation, Civ2, Call to Power 1 + 2, Alpha Centauri + X-pack and now Civ3 + PtW
