How do I properly keep my glasses clean?

I have a strange issue. My glasses can't seem to keep clean. I wash it and all the stains go away. But within a minute or two the stains come back.

I even tried the fancy glasses cleaner and that didn't help. Neither did distilled water or alcohol swabs or dry cloth. Any suggestions? :scan:

Contact lenses are not an option for me. Can't have anything touching my eyes.

This seems... implausible.

I use microfiber cloth and it works well enough for me. Can't say I've ever used auto-staining glasses, though.

Get conta... oh wait.

Well, you're missing out Amy!

Wash your face too. If your face is touching your glasses, anything from your face will smudge on the glasses.

Get a microfleece wipe (e.g. Walmart/Sears) for your glasses Aimee. And don't touch them.

Well the microfiber cloth is what I use and its from the glasses place.

If you,re lazy you can buy one of those sonic cleaner stuff that they use at glasses stores. Thats hiw they keep it so clean.

Oil, skin flakes and all that stuff your face leaves is gonna attract bacterias. So its important to keep both face and glasses contantly clean.

A screenshot photo would be helpful. I can't imagine anything that doesn't go away with alcohol + microfiber.

Oh, and it's really worth overcoming the "can't have anything in my eyes" reflex. It's natural, everyone has it, but that can be trained. I only managed to get accustomed to contacts in the second attempt (the first was with solid ones, though), but now I don't even notice if they're there. Start with slowly touching your eyeballs with your fingertips without blinking.

What do you think is causing the stains? I would assume skin and hair oils would be a possible problem, although one probably fixed (hair cut and proper washing, although I will assume you already have good hygiene).

Don't touch your glasses or anything as it'll put skin oil smudges all over it. What I do is clean them off in the shower. Put some soap on the lenses and when I take them out, I do an initial padding down of any excess water with a fuzzy cloth then finalize the cleaning with a lint cloth.

Too much game on the brain?

I wash mine with water, and use a dry paper towel to clean them off. Sometimes this leaves smears, and I'll get rid of those using the cloth that they provide you.

Well, either way, the optermist (I can't spell that) did not think contacts were a good idea.

The stains look like oil. But I dont touch my glasses. It mostly happens on the outside too.

Well I tried soap. But it still stained up.

Do your glasses have any special coatings?

Not that I'm aware.

I have the same problem... it's annoying as hell

Not that easy. If Aimee has it half as bad as I've got it she gets irritated eyes by only speaking/seeing/writing about eyes. Last time I wore contacts was when I went shopping for the glasses I am currently have. The optician had a hard time getting the damned things in, took her about 10 minutes per eye. She told me that she had never had that much trouble with a custome :p.

(My eyes are now irritated...)

Is it possible it happens when you're adjusting your hair? That's when my glasses tend to get stained most of the time...

I would guess that your lenses probably do have an anti-relective coating. Those can make the lenses a lot harder to keep clean, especially once the coating gets scratched or starts to wear off. The more expensive coatings are quite not as bad as the cheap kind, but are still much higher maintenance than lenses with no coating. (I got the premium anti-reflective coating on a pair of glasses over the summer, but decided that they cost way more than they were worth so I took them back and got a cheap pair online instead. I've also helped my sister clean her older cheaper anti-reflective lenses before.)

Hydrophobic coatings are supposed to help prevent lenses from getting dirty, but they also make it so that water alone is practically worthless for cleaning them. The alcohol found in glasses cleaners can actually damage some coatings and make matters worse. Ordinary liquid hand soap and cool tap water works much better. (Do not use hot water on a coated lens, because it can cause the coating to crack.) I'd recommend you gently rub a little soap on the lenses, rinse thoroughly, and wipe dry with a microfiber cloth.

Aimee, you should ask the optician who sold you the glasses to check their records to see if there are any special coatings they used.

Also, do you ever get cat hair on the lenses? That happens to me all the time, and is annoying, but I live with it. Or maybe something in the air where you live? Your mom smokes, and it's winter. This is a bad combination for having clean air around, and what's in the air will usually end up on one's glasses at some point.

I have exactly the same problem.

Sorry, never found a solution (no pun intended).

Same here. My eyes, although strong, are rather sensitive. If I were to ever require vision adjustment, I could not go with the glasses or contact lenses route, as something merely in front of my eyes irritates them to the point of being forced to shut them.

I'd probably need to go straight to laser treatment if my eye sight were to falter.

Anyways Aimee, check on the coating on the lenses, and bring it around to a glasses shop and get it checked out and ask for a solution. It might cost you some money but if they test it at the store and it works, it's probably a worthwhile investment.

Dirty glasses are the bane of my existence. You just gotta push throw and/or become completely obsessed with cleaning them. I give up usually, my hair gets kinda longish in the front and my glasses are dirty as hell because of it. I just clean them before class or before hitting the town so society doesn't judge me.

Also, I totally understand the hate for contacts. It just doesn't work for some people.

As him for a trial pair. He already has your prescription so a trial pair will be free and more potential business for him, so he shouldn't have any problem with it.. unless there is some sort of medical condition preventing you from wearing them? Once you have a trial pair you can try it out and see if contacts are for you.

I used to wear glasses and hated them. Got contacts, have been wearing them ever since.
