Do they have some kind of chip in your TV or something? This has bothered me for many years.

That's not very fun. :(

ok then, there is a chip inside your t.v. that sends info on every show you watch and for how long you watched it to the goverment. plus there are spy cameras watching you and recording you/your family as you watch so the big bad companys can know what jokes you laugh at so they can put similar jokes into the next shows ;)

They select people to participate. At least that is what I seem to remember about how the 'Nielson' ratings are done. They select a small % of the population, and I believe they send you a device that records the stations you are watching. I think they had to have watched a program for a certain amount of minutes or certain % of the show, for it to count as being 'watched' (channel surfing won't be counted as you watching all of the shows).

Bamspeedy, I am fairly sure that it is the same system in the UK.
I am sure that it would be easy to utilise digital systems such as satellite or cable to submit accurate feed back. The more accurate the info they have, (and coupled with their knowledge of the household members) then the more they can justify higher advertising charges to the relevant advertiser.

bamspeedy's right

Do you mean it is possible for e.g. sky digiboxes to send information about what you are watching? I don't think that would work, since it couldn't tell if the TV was on or not -- how many people switch their sky boxes off when they're done watching?

Yes I believe it is possible with a minor modification of a digibox to send that info back to sky. Of course you have a point regarding the digibox being left on. Also you cannot tell which member(s) of a household are watching the programs.

I think it just gets automatically appended to the weekly submission to the government of your internet surfing habits.

That's a bit stupid. Some people might not watch TV, or use it for videos, ddvds games etc.

Hmm, it might work on cable, but on sky, I'm pretty sure it can't because you'd need the satellite dish on the side of your house to start sending transmissions; as far as I know, it is only a receiver. But I suppose they could use the telephone lines or something (freephone with our permission).
