How do u kill those damned bowmen garrisoned in cities?

Ok i have a game right now where the enemy is using longbowmen the ones that get a bonus to defense when in a city and I am using modern weapons like guns and aircraft. I have a really hard time killing those bowmen and taking cities. Even after taking the city defense down to 0% they kill my musketmen or anything else i attack them with, and aircraft seem to have no effect on units in cities.

Bombard them as well as reducing the cities defenses ... collateral damage through the use of Catapults, Cannon, Artillery, Bombers and Fighters will often reduce all defenders to 1/3 strength if done right and repeatedly.

Recently, to bring down a strong AI, I had ships bomdaring his defenses, planes bombing the defenses and the troops within (for collateral damage), and artillery doing the same ... with tanks and infantry ready to mop up the damaged defenders.

aircraft seem to have no effect on units in cities.

With bombers you have to use the airstrike option rather than the bombing mission option . The air strike will damage units rather than degrade the defense bonus.

Also you can get the "cover" promotion for your units - giving +25% againts archers.

In addition to all the useful suggestions above, there is also the City Raider I, II, and III promotions, which give +20%, +25%, and +30% to city attacks, respectively.
