[NFP] How does "appease the gods" actually appease the gods??

Do you agree there is an inconsistency between the title and the gains of the competition?

In Apocalyptic mode we get this peaceful competition:

I chose not to participate anymore.
Gaining a Soothsayer unit has nothing to do with appeasing the gods. When you use them, you only create more CO2, therefore you get closer to the end of the world.
I should know, I won the first competition by far, look what it got me:

I had a HUGE diplomatic penalty for a long time, now in 1910 it's meaningless but when I used the Soothsayers I was the only one, emitting so much!

Those competitions should give something that will decrease the odds of the end of the world, not worsen it, if they are to be consistent with the title. Some carbon capture maybe via forest planting in the early ages I don't know.

IIRC the more units you throw into volcano using Soothsayers, the less likely your cities will be hit by a Comet in the late game.

I do think the loser(s) of the competition should automatically get hit with some sort of disaster since they obviously didn't appease them enough.
Maybe not all of them but make it an incentive to try and not be near the bottom.

what makes you think the gods aren't trying to hasten the end of the world?

they are asking you to throw people into a volcano. why would you think they are benevolent?
OK sure, but then let's not call it "appeasing the gods" but "pleasing the gods to end our earthly suffering faster" :D

I didn't know that! Would make sense.

Totally agree.

Joining in this competition is a waste of units, Let the AIs squander their troops this way. It's also a totally stupid idea that should never have got beyond a whimsical suggestion in a brainstorming session. Pushing an entire cavalry division into an active volcano? Can you visualise it?

This is a fantastic idea. Makes it a little more dynamic.
