I only read the first post, so you'll have to excuse me if I am repeating someone else, but I'm in a bit of a hurry.
People were not exactly as developed then, our technical thinking and much of our brain was underdeveloped then, even though they may have been Homo Sapiens Sapiens, like us.
Also, then human society was based on hunting and collecting, not agriculture and urbanisation. It was less effective, therefore they couldn't do as much else than try to survive. This may, though, be the minor of reasons, it sure seems like a lot of time.
But you do see that technological, social development, etc. really took pace when we moved toward an agricultural society, and we also see that in ancient times, the most developed cultures were the agricultural ones. First of all it feeds more people, triggering development, who will be able to specialise in other things than agriculture; handwork etc. It also promoted an early urbanisation...
