I know what you mean. Still, that's due to the way our schools seem to find the most boring aspect and then talk about nothing else. E.g., women in the war, or how the blind were oppressed during the Roman times, or some such nonsense.

I voted the second option, by the way.

 That is supposed to be considered an improvement over the histories of wars and kings! Blame academic specialization.

Very interested, it used to be my favorite subject all through school.

However, my interests in intellectual matters are too consumed by other things. Mostly, I find myself reading recent (last 50 years or less) history, usually taking interest in one particular event or region for a few months; Like Afghanistan a few years ago (way before 9/11), the former USSR 'stans, and North Korea today.

I'm a history geek, so to speak. Reading Russian history right now.

Oh no. I blame the liberals. :p

As long as we can empathise with, identify with and understand, the female peasants of 1789, knowledge of the actual events of that year seem irrelevant - to take a real example, from someone I know who has just left school. She hardly knew what had happened in 1789, but she could write a representative diary of a typical poor person. Whoopy-do.

Unfortunately, she wasn't taught why the poor were in that situation, what happened before, or what happened in the following years.
Rather serious gaps in her knowledge, I'd have said.

Just out of curiosity, as I seriously considered that myself some years ago, which university would you choose for it?

i find the how-it-affects-us part very interesting sometimes, but this general-neverheardofhim-smith-counter-attack-at-the-battle-of-nowhere part is very... geek.

As someone said the a civ related site should be full of history lovers.

I do like history (and civ helped me there), but I always hated knowing dates of battles, assassinations etc. It's enough for me to know someone died and a war started circa 1914ish. If a documentary is on I'll generally watch it.
The only area of history I study of my own initiative is the history of mathematics, especially during the 19th century and early 20th century. Although I'm sure this does differ slightly to Yoda's idea when he started the poll.

I love history; am watching the History Channel as I type this. I pay extra for several history type channels.

My 8th grade Social Studies teacher made learning history fun; my 11th grade teacher was the opposite in teaching methods.

I enjoy reading history, but prefer books that are written in a non boring manner. History can be written/taught/etc. in a boring manner, but it can also be done in an exciting manner. It depends on the way it is presented.

As a history student in college, all I can say to those thinking about getting into it is: you have no idea what you guys are getting into (in a good way) you will never see life, you, the world, and your place in it, the same way again. If that's good or bad, I can't say...but of course, in history there is no good or bad ;)

Certainly not Bremen as I as a CDU member would end up in constant fights with all the lefties there

I took out these rankings from Spiegel,Stern and Focus and for history I'm currently in decision between Rostock,Greifswald,Freiburg,Trier and München.

You considered History and ended up with MATHEMATICS?

Whenever there is history information available on TV, books, magazines, news papers.

It's like an addiction. Hmm... I need help.

I'm a history major myself. Not sure if I want to go into lawschool or not(I did get a kick out of doing a 20page research paper on Symbolic Hate Speech).

Right now I'm doing an allnighter on a simple midtern assignment on this question. "Is the American "system" one which was designed to channel humankind's naturally univrtuous activities into the greater good, and if so with what result?" Its actually harder then the 20pager because the professor gave us no guidelines of any kind!

Tell me about it! Gotta love the political debates that get started over something so simple as comparing Clinton to Jacksonian era history.

College History(school willing) is such a radical departure from anything you will have experienced in highschool. As you advance out of the more Freshman/General requirement classes you begin to notice this.
