So I really want to enjoy a good game of RP civ6, but I always end up doing more or less the same strategy, with just a tiny bit of flavour change.

I think this is because I yank up the difficulty through mods which then forces me into my optimal strategy. Reflecting on this I tried to lower the difficulty, but it resulted in a boring game because the AI was just there, not posing any challenge or messing with my plans.

What am I doing wrong? Or what can I change? Im really into RP, but I have a hard time get into in civ6.

For variety, try the scenarios, which have a more specific atmosphere and some unique art assets, like the temples in the Nubia scenario.

I find that optimizing the map settings for my civ helps me get into the zone for RPing.

I actually find that turning off all the victory conditions except score at the very end is the best way to roleplay. This way you don't get all pigeonholed on one thing and just build up a good civ.

Try setting certain limitations for yourself that fit well with RP. For example, you could try not to go to war at all and not create any carbon emissions, and use RP to explain why you're limiting yourself.
When I had a start that had a huge mountain range separating me from the rest of the continent, I ended up RPing like the Swiss, where I'm a peaceful trade nation that uses my natural borders to keep me from ever having to go to war.
Using geography as a way to RP is both realistic and fun in my opinion.
If you have a Tundra or Desert civ, RPing as a religious civ makes sense since you can use the pantheons that add great Holy site adjacency in those terrains, and you can justify it as the harsh terrain has forced your civilization to develop a strong unifying religion to help your people survive.
You can then decide whether you want to go a more peaceful or militaristic route from there, since Faith can be great for buying military units, or as a way to help with cultural victories.
