How To: Spot a Jap

It says that the Chinese are more American than the Japanese in that book. I guess Americans believe that not American= bad.

I wonder how they would compare the Germans to the Chinese then.

So potrayals of caractures of certan races is not racism? I'd guess by that logic the black face performance is not racism..

It was a practical guide, not a joke. They must have thought all of those things were true. Although there was a certain degree of animosity, hey, it's war. All sides engaged in war propaganda. I just don't get why people are so sensitive about this. "Oh, discrimination, oh, oh, oh!"

That's quite a statement there, you mind actually giving any proof??

Not sure if I can find proof, but I know the Japanese are pretty elitist over other Asian countries and think they're superior (not sure if all Asian countries are elitist though). There's some photos of Korean schoolchildren stomping on the Japanese flag and pictures that they drew of Japan getting bombed off the map floating around if you want to try and find them (I'll get them tomorrow if you want).

There wasn't much I saw wrong with that book, other then that crack they made about Japanese being 'modest', or whatever it was. That whole 'Japanese shuffle when they walk' might've also been a stereotype, not sure though.

:nono: Blackface is filled with jokes and stereotypes, the bit about sandales is true, as is being stockyer than chinese people. The rest I am not so sure but, I know they printed that in an attempt to save lives not to entertain white people (blackface)

I need to point this out for anyone who didn't catch this:

Is trolling the only thing you know how to do?

I wonder how many people would be saying 'lol propoganda' if I posted a manual telling American Soldiers that Germans cant pronounce Scheveningen or Nijimen.

Who says we believe everything we hear? I know very FEW who believe what politicians are saying in ANY country. All we can do is pick the better of the two evils, but at least here in America we CAN pick. :D

Do you think this would actually work outside of a world were all ethnic groups conform to racist European stereotypes?

I think some people are completely missing the point here. The book wasn't made for Americans to feel superior to Asians, but was rather practical, in that someone who didn't know either culture well would have trouble distinguishing Chinese and Japanese. And although no doubt a lot of the advice played on racial stereotypes, some of was no doubt useful. Chinese and Japanese are, in fact, very different languages, and so it is possible using sounds to tell their speakers apart even if you speak neither.

Oh, I know that, but it still reflects the racist attitudes of Americans at the time. Doesn't matter how sincerely they believed it, this is still basically a bunch of racist stereotypes dressed up as facts.
Still, as you said, the speech one could've been useful, although I doubt it would work quite as they presented it.

Shiboleth's are a pretty time tested method. As has been pointed out, we did the same thing to Germany, and the Japanese did the same thing to spot Koreans. The thing with the Sandal is absolutely true, as a callous will develop from where sandals all the time.

Yeah, assuming that every Japanese person lived on a farm. Which, judging by the fact that WW2 Japan was a modern, industrialised nation.

Actually, the majority of Japanese people did work in agriculture at the time, and some who lived in "urban" centers still wore traditional dress at the time.
