THis is allways an interesting topic around my house. How and when will America fall?

I would haveto say that we will last another thousand years max. We will end up being like the romans. getting to big for areselves and then crumbleing under our own weight. This will probly happen when terrorists attack. the blow will force the US, allready in a couple hundred year slump caused by war and poor economic growth, to crumble.

I doubt that the US will exist in its current form in even 500 years. There are too many prospects on the horizon that will dramatically affect the future of every nation. For example, what will happen when fusion power generation becomes practical, or when cyborgization becomes tenable, or when space exploration establishes off-world colonies?

Eventually it'll be worn down by pygmies swarming around its feet, snapping at its ankles. So great will be its fall, that it'll take most of the pygmies with it, and the few surviving pygmies will be rendered dumb with shock, and there will be much wailing and gnashing of teeth.

Agree and disagree. Within 100 years, the US will no longer be a world power. Within 200 years, the US either won't exist or will have changed so radically as to be unrecognizable as the US.

EDIT: Changed radically is more than a simple change of government, as happened to the Roman Republic. Changed radically is more like half of the country separating/collapse of government with a small portion of the country continuing to claim the title of USA.

If we take America falling as meaning America no longer being the preeminant power, that will almost certainly take place sometime this century. In 2005 the United States is still number one but is in relative decline compared to the rest of the world much as Britain was in 1905.

The technological lead of the United States is slipping and that means its ability to punch above its demographic weight will also slip over the next few decades. It's not a question of sudden collapse it's really just a question of everyone else catching up, much as the US did itself a century before in catching up and overtaking the UK after her own century of dominance as the first Industrialised Nation.
