Humankind Game by Amplitude

Hmm, so they are doing the Civ palace/throne room in the form of a leader, so you customize as you go? Or is it more skin to Fable or the like where your character represents your actions/choices in the game?

The avatar is persistent across matches, so it can evolve both within one game and between your games.

As for the blue hair, I'm taking a wild guess here: One of our 3D artists dyes his hair blue, so perhaps that avatar is his doing, and it might have been chosen as it would be recognizable among the other figures on screen in the transitions.

Well, this is one of the things I was curious about, how the different players would be identified in a game without fixed cultures or historical leaders. I think the approach of having a custom avatar makes a lot of sense, and as an RPG player (I suspect there is significant overlap between strategy and RPG player bases), I really like the idea of inserting my own avatar into the game, and developing it.

I wonder, though, this evolution of the character, is it only cosmetic, or does it have any gameplay implications? Since it is persistent between games (cool idea in any case), that would add a roguelite element to the game.

I do think there could still be room for historical characters in the game, even if they are not necessarily the leaders of civs.

Anyway, looking forward to more gameplay info and beautiful screenshots. :-)

I'm also an RPG player, and I am pleased to see a character creator in a 4X game. That's a nice bit of genre crossover.

Seconded for the above comments. I can't wait to see how this works in practice.

IF anyone were to take a massive gamer poll (maybe on Steam), I suspect there would a lot of Role-Playing - at least mentally - among players of all types of games.
Shucks, I'm a hard-nosed military historian, but when older versions of Civ allowed me to rename Leaders, I used to play Celts or Gauls all the time as Asterix, Romans as Odius Asparagus or Nefarius Purpus, Vikings as Red Orm, and Russians as Ivan the Tolerable . . .
- And yes, those are all literary references, albeit somewhat obscure these days.

Catoninetales, thanks a lot for participating in these forums. Are you able to answer either of these questions?

1. Will Humankind have modding tools and a Steam workshop for user mods? Modding is really important to me and other players (it's one of the main reasons I love Civ so much), and I think it greatly extends the longevity and appeal of strategy games.

2. Will Humankind have an open alpha like other Amplitude games?

New trailer!

Humankind’s Cities look good. Nice density and sprawl.

Having a persistent leader makes sense to give interactions and role play some focus. Makes the game similar to Civ, but that’s inevitable for a 4X along these lines and is no bad thing.

The culture thing still looks like a remix of Civ V Social Policies to me. Pick this, get that, pick something else that synergises later. Can’t see it has much to do with actual cultural development - choices aren’t based on who you invaded or who invaded you or who you’re near; each choice is monolithic applying across you empire so no room for multi-cultural cities; multiple Civs can’t pick the same culture so can’t have multiple Greek descendant Civs, etc. Not saying it’s a bad Mechanic, just don’t think it’s going to set the world on fire.

Still. Looks good so far.

Will we also have the option to edit and save our avatars for if we want to roleplay as different people across games?

Right now the biggest downside to Humankind seems not having actual historical figures to play against or as. Narratively speaking I would like the mix of cultures the player creates to be something more than just a set of bonuses.

The use of the word ‘district’ in the trailer seems like a nod to Civ VI.

TBF you never actually see yourself outside of the loading screen and the civ bonuses screen in Civ6.

I wouldn't automatically assume everything is going to mirror Civ VI.

In fact, I think if there's one safe bet we can make about anything in Humankind that has not been hinted or revealed yet, it is that it will not mirror Civ VI: what's the point of trying to sell a clone of another company's game?

Amplitude had districts as city center expansion mechanism in Endless Legend, predating 6.

Definitely - I think we are better off guessing how Humankind will play from Endless Legend/Endless Space than Civ.

Sure, but the context is much closer to a historically inspired game now, and the trailer also shows a city sprawling outward which is reminiscent of Civ VI; which one came first is irrelevant when it comes to summoning the specter of the other in advertising. I suspect they would like at least some Civ fans to give the game a go.

Well, it's been 25 years and people are still releasing unimaginative near-clones of Panzer General so...
