Well, this is the first culture I actually would have preferred not be in the game. Chances of getting the Mali are now extremely thin.
I haven't been able to find any historical evidence to support the claim that the Ghana Empire used mounted camel cavalry, so would be interested to see where their historian found some.
Also, that "Luxuries Market" is based on the Larabanga Mosque. Aside from supposedly being built by a trader, I'm not sure what it has to do with markets...
I see we're back to the colorful culture art. Lovely. Though I still maintain we're looking at a case of unjustified discrimination against medieval Europe.

This is nice I like theres been a fair few cultures that haven't shown up in Civ before or have been absent for a long time. That culture card is beautiful this is back to top quality cards I dont get why England and to a lesser extent Franks got such dull and basic cards in comparison. Theres so much we can see in this Ghana card the landscape, their buildings and clothing even as someone who knows next to nothing about this culture I get a lot of flavour of what they are about in this card.
I am kinda surprised they went with Ghana instead of Mali, because the more famous cities like Timbuktu, Djenne, and Gao fell outside of their control.

I'm sure that a big part of the camels is that the introduction of the camel is what enabled Ghana, followed by Mali, Songhai, etc., to have the kind of trade network they had. Since camels are a common form of transportation/war for the North Africa/Middle East regions, it's not too much of a stretch (if at all).
As for why they used a mosque to model a market off of, that makes me scratch my head a bit.

Were mosques known to be a nexus for trade with merchants setting up around it? It was quite common for markets to emerge around churches in christendom perhaps this is the same thing?
Calling them Ghanaians might make it confusing. Usually that refers to people of the modern-day nation of Ghana, which has little to do with the historical Ghana Empire. So I guess the modern nation won't appear in the Modern Era then, for obvious reasons.
So my guess of Ghana with Merchant turned out correct....That makes it three African cultures with Merchant in the first three eras.

Me as well. From what I've read the Kingdom of Ghana was a precursor to the Malian Empire, but the later's timespan fell under or overlapped the early modern period. Maybe the early modern era was already full when they thought of choosing between Ghana and Mali?

But Kumbi Saleh, the marvel of early medieval Africa is their capital.
Ghana (often called Ghâna to be more specific) is a great choice. There‘s nothing wrong with having this Kingdom, located in modern Mauretania, in the game. I will reread the chapters on it in a book about medieval Africa and then comment on the emblematics tomorrow.

It's a possibility, though I think it's just to keep up the policy of basing the quarters on some real building. Kind of like Babylon has the (famous building) Gate of Ishtar for its (unrelated quarter) Astronomy House.

I think calling them the Wagadou or the Soninke would have been a better choice. "Ghanaians" is not only inaccurate, but it's also just a very awkward term.
The culture card is amazing and gorgeous. Simply that.
Might we get an early modern Songhai?
Three times merchant for Africa is disappointing, I'd like to hear if nobody noticed that before? On the other hand, Africa is not a country, and Nubia, Axum and Ghana are from different regions. So...
Edit: I didnt intentionally forget Egypt and Carthage, I just mentally classified them as mediterranean, something completely different... Sorry if I offended anyone. But I would gladly get a a statement from Cat on the three merchants nevertheless.
It would really be nice to be able to say anything about the abilities, so i hope they will soon reveal more.
