Agreed. They're only relevant in that pop culture has immortalized their defeat of a few British armies but ultimately were a local power without much influence.Honestly expected. The culture that I'm least excited about.
Oh well, at least we're going to the Contemporary Era next week!
Of course it shouldn't be limited to the Industrial Revolution but the Zulu were such a minor player that have been over-popularized. There were better choices for African representation in the time period (Ethiopia, Madagascar, something from the Swahili coast perhaps, Morocco), but i do hope that yest we get a modern South Africa with this at some point.Industrial era is a period defined by HK, not exclusive to industrialized cultures. Even if I initially didn't expect them, for me it's really a limited vision to only consider cultures which get the industrial revolution.
Personally I'm interessed by a lot of cultures of this time period which are not related to industrial revolution.
I hope than the addition of Zulu will maybe offer to us a lineage into modern South African ?
The art is awesome, really badass
I hope other sub-Saharan African factions are added later, like Zimbabwe, Ashanti, Benin, Dahomey, Kongo, Somalia, Swahili, and Merina/Madagascar. I guess the Zulu have the name brand recognition over those. So we have zero Merchant factions in Industrial. A strange choice, but oh well. I'm expecting to see the Americans next week.
They've been in every Civ game since the first because of their "they beat the British empire with spears" recognition that movies, books, etc. have been written on for centuries. And why they are over-represented, in videogames ? they only appeared in two civ if I am not wrong.
They are rather important in their geographical zone, and always an important ethnic, cultural and linguistic group today.
Ethiopian already have a representation in the game, and have high chance to be in modern era. Zulu like a lot of cultures deserve to be in the game. It's rather subjective. I mean, Magadascar for exemple, why they are a better choice for an African representation, they are not less minor than Zulu, and it seems to be a question of tastes here. And I said that when I want to have Madagascar.
It just seems insulting for me to say than a culture is a better African reprensentation than another one.
I mean, a culture represent itself, not the whole continent ...
And tbh, the problem of no Merchant in industrial era don't come from Zulu. All african cultures so far in HK were merchant until today, it would have been silly if we get again a merchant african culture today. And we absolutly needed an african culture in industrial era.
It's not especially the best era to represent Morocco and Swahili for me, again it's debatable, when there is not better era (if I am not wrong) to represent the Zulu than industrial era.
Personally, the only thing I expected at a moment, was getting an alternative of the Zulu archetype (singular military doctrine for the era), with the Rozvi Empire for exemple. If they want to make something really different of Civ.
I am not really interessed in Zulu, in term of gameplay, because I have the biase of Civ 6 gameplay.
I hope they will have a more interesting trope in the way we will play them.
So for the moment we miss a medieval aesthete, and a merchant industrial. Seems to be easy DLC. I wonder who will be missing in modern era.![]()
Maybe we could get the Qing as merchants in industrial (tea trade, opium wars...)? But could be too many chinese cultures for some.
