Hyborem crash bug reports/search for cause of bug

*drools*

So people are up to 8GB already eh, man it's depressing how fast your PC becomes obsolete. Wouldn't it still be better on XP though? :P And less compatibility problems of course..

Anyway I'll stop hijacking this now *blushes*

I just tried the XP compatibility mode and it won't recognize the CD as bieng in the drive.

Did the same thing to me. I had to install a crack from megagames.com in order to get it to run. But once i did that and installed 9.0c the hyborem crashes stopped.

You did test this out on a new game right not an existing game?

yes I started a new game. I don't know, maybe I didn't install 9.0c correctly or it just didn't activate or something, no idea. I just tried a new game and it still crashes when the hell terrain hits the desert and turns into burning sands.

I'll try installing that DX 9c thing again, I have no idea whether it did install properly or what.

edit: ok, I just tried reinstalling and it confirmed that I have directX 9 on there, so, I really don't know what is going on here, whether the DX 9 is just not 'activated' or what.

aBut you aren't running in compatibility mode though? I suggest trying that. You can just backup the exe before you install the crack and put it back if it doesn't help.

Sorry for the long replies but unless you're in the chat room its hard for me to pay that much attention to forums when I'm not at work ;)

edit: nm, I just stated the obvious, lol

Anyways, I'll try that crack for xp compat mode.

On a lark can someone try this test patch and see if it effects the Hyborem CtD issue:

Test Patch 2: Patch "d test2" (disable burning sand flames)

geh, that xp compat crack did not work, I still crashed with the burning sands. I'll try those test patches in a minute though.

Edit: test patch 1 crashes 3 turns I think after the burning sands appeared. I'm going to do a new game for each test patch to be sure about it.

james just apply normal D again then test with patch 2. That should work for new games even if you place settlers for hyborem all over deserts. won't fix games where sand is already burning though.

I was testing patch 2 while you posted this, and.... it worked!

Here is a cheated game where I gave myself 100K influence just to see what the whole terrain would look like.

I'll check out the other two, and you don't have to reapply the origional patch.

I have a test save with just myself playing hyborem, deleted the AIs, and surrounded myself with burning sands. No patch and it crashes first turn every time I load it, and usually first turn if I remake the test (sometimes I get one or two flames to show up, it always crashes pretty quickly though). First patch doesn't do anything, crashes the same way. Second patch seems to stop it crashing completely (fixes the save I uploaded too). Third patch crashes same as no patch. Fourth patch was unusual, it made the save I posted in the bug thread not crash the first turn, though it crashed like 4 turns later anyway. The other test save crashed instantly as usual.

I tried to make a few big forests and set them on fire with imps blazing, first time it crashed the first turn, but I tried again and got a nice blaze going, no crashes. Maybe I messed up the test first time, kinda tired:) Would be surprising if it was flames per se though, I should've noticed that, even though I don't use blaze/Acheron much. Plus they do work, just not always.

Anyway, must sleep now, hope that helps!

Well, the one with the fallout doesn't crash me, although the instant I put burning sands under a peak and went out of worldbuilder I crashed, so there is a crash with that, but I didn't crash because of the fallout on normal tiles I think. I'll test the fourth one for that possible peak related crash.

Edit: I tested out the fourth one and the flames crashed me before my borders could expand. I tested it again, this time with the desert removed except for under the peak and this time while the burning sands still appeared under it, the flames did not appear, so I did not crash.

So the flames are somehow crashing this thing, and the crash with peaks and special features must be related.

I'm going to use test patch 2 since that seems to work. Honestly though, I don't really like the fallout effect in test patch 3 all that much.

Anyways, I'll prob go to bed now too, night all :)

Here is a better fix that hpefully keeps the burning sands ability while avoiding the crashes:

Test Patch 10: Patch "d test10" (never expire burning sands)

yep, no crash with this one! *cheers*

Still the flame above the mountain does look kind of strange.

I can't load your pic very well Yao, but heres one of mine anyways :)

how did you go from 4 straight to 10? I'll check that one out though.

Calbrenar and I went through a lot of test versions last night.

cool. So, what did you do with the code that stopped it from crashing and still allowed the flames to appear? I'm just really curious here since this is such a strange crash bug for me. Which now seems to be 100% fixed for me.
