Hypothetical: Scotland Becomes Independent

In fact, the monarchy plays an important role exactly because it is so ludicrous. No modern constitutional monarchy can take itself so seriously as to fool itself into thinking it has perfected the structure of government. It is too silly! It reminds one that ALL systems depend on the intentions of the individuals within that system and the real, practical distribution of power and wealth.

Heavily republican societies might be more prone to hubris about the ability of their institutions and structures to safeguard against abuses of power and wealth. Perhaps the French are different, because no matter who is in power, the government can be overthrown if the people feel like they are being screwed.

As a Scot i DO NOT want independence. What's the point? We're better off under the union..

Yeah, but you have been delusioned by the west.... oh hold on :mischief:

Deluded? Scotland has done pretty well under the union. Independence would raise alot of problems.

Well, it killed your two languages.

You Americans didn't seem to mind killing off various native Americans let alone their language or culture.

Basically, one of the major reasons why Scotland won't become independent is because it would have too much of a hard time coming up with solutions all those question posed in the op!

Independence is soemthing trumped up by the SNP, who only do so well cuz everyone hates Labour at the moment. In reality it would be worse off for both parties and most people on both sides of the border are clever enuogh to know this.

Sure, but after a couple of years of the coming Tory parliament w/ vast majority playing with scottland as a testbed where they dont really care about the results since they dont have any mp's there... They could just aggravate the scotts enough.

If the scots were to become independent it wouldn't make much differance. Last night at midnight it happend - Brussel's is now the capital of Scotland, if they broke from the Union they would remain in the EU.

I would have thought you would care about your own language or culture?

Or make them all vote Labour again!

I do, but Scotland now is a perceived land filled with stereotypes; we are not kilt clad, short bread eating, whisky swilling rough northern types with a strong interest in bizaare and unfathomable dialects, we're a country in a unique position Bill. Do we fall back on our percieved image and blame others for our situation or do we forge our own path in the world? Gaelic is still spoken and cultural activities are especially prevalent in the highlands. Whilst i am all for persevering Scottish culture be it musical, food, linguistic or garb, i'd prefer Scotland to present herself in a positive, friendly, non-patronising, modern way without forgetting her roots be they in post or pre union history.

The Irish part of the union flag wasn't removed when we left - I doubt it would be changed.

I imagine QEII would still be the head of state - we kept the king (represented by a governor) for many years after independence. We also had Royal Navy ports for a couple of decades. The army pulled out pretty quickly. We shared our currency.

One of the things that did get messed up was customs and tariffs in the 30s - but everyone was doing that at the time.

Not all of Ireland left

The Brits simply added a "Northern" to Ireland, and kept the flag the same, the Saint Patrick's cross now representing Northern Ireland.

Anyway... I'm not entirely sure it would make economic sense to leave.

That is probably why it will not happen for the foreseeable future.

I pray that people see sense and do not subscribe to this SNP bullcrap.

If they declare independance, there may well be a war. There's no way that we would stand for it. God save the queen!
