I don't support the troops

God Bless the Military, Tea Party Movement, The Republican Party. Death to Communism, Socialism and Progressivism.

Please go away. I don't know if you're trolling or for real, but either way, you aren't adding anything of value here.

Oh lighten up. He's obviously joking. The thread was long derailed when he came anyway, so it's not like things were going to improve much. Just accept him as the fantastic piece of entertainment he is.
In a weak-hearted attempt to get the thread back on topic, I do agree that the U.S. military budget ought to be drastically cut, but seeing as I'm a pacifist, that's hardly surprising. Still, what we currently have is more than a little excessive, and that money could easily be spent on far more valuable causes (combating poverty, education, space exploration, medical research, etc.)

Entertainment? It is sad and disgusting, like seeing a baby strangle itself with a plastic bag.

Anyway, I'm not a pacifist in the least, but the military should be far more efficient and less of a wasteful twit when it comes to procurement.

Eh. If he is legitimately serious, you're right, but I suspect he's just an unusually skillful troll. My tenure in the Yahoo Answers Religion and Spirituality section has helped me in spotting them immensely. I recognize there are people in the world who do believe some of this, but he just gives off vibes of insincerity.
Anyhow, what in particular would you make more efficient? What should the extra money be used for?

We could afford what we have in the military now and maybe more while being able to spend on, say, health care or employing more people if we spent military money more wisely. The Comanche, XM-8, and Zumwalts are some example of expensive and cancelled projects.

True that, brother!

May the Flying Spaghetti Monster bring death unto the Tea Party Movement and Republican Party!

The form of the Republic destroys any chance of efficiency for military procurement. Legislators oversee the budget, which includes limitations on the cost of a variety of items. You often hear about $400 hammers and the like, and that's simply because the price for the missile is limited by law, and the price for the toolkit which comes to maintain the missile is not. So when a defense contractor hits a cost overrun, they can't change the price on the end product but can often attach extras to the order without invoking any problems. Because weapons programs and their costs are almost always controversial, this is the only way to make the system work.

There is one are that needs to be addressed here though, and that's the tendency of former military procurement personnel taking jobs in the private sector and running for Congress. The people who approve the $400 hammer almost always end up on the board of the company that sold it, and that needs to be stopped.

The soloution is the nationalization of the military-industrial complex. No one should ever profit off weaponry, war and death.

Obama campaigned heavily on bringing the troops home. Yet, once he WAS the President, he didn't do it. Why do you suppose that is....? I'll tell you. Knowledge. Once Obama became President and had all the U.S. government's information sources at his disposal, once he had an actual picture of how the whole world works, his viewpoint changed. As would yours. If you became President, you would repudiate the above faster than I can type "tolja so"--and I type fast.

The reason you can have your opinion in good conscience is because you have the pleasant luxury of not knowing what Obama knows. Fact is, bringing the troops home and chopping our defense spending is not a good idea.
Are you saying you have information of the same level as the United States' intelligence services?

If you do, would you mind sharing it? While I may be wrong because of my ignorance (and that is definitely possible), it's just spiteful to hint at the vast resources that I'm missing and then not let me in. Also, I do not particularly agree with many of the president's decisions or methods. I know you did not claim this, this is just a disclaimer.

Oh, and guys, just because the topic title is polemic doesn't mean the entire thread has to be.

So in all seriousness, I really think the United States defense system is bloated and we've wasted countless billions (although they are being rigorously counted) with our wars (and the one that is defensible is underfunded). How can people justify this spending?

People making a profit is the point of Capitalism. I see nothing wrong with profiting off weaponry. Especially when its being used to defend freedom. Do everyone a favor and go move to Cuba you no good commie.

Profit is inherently evil and exploitative, particularly when one goes about profiting off death.

Profting and making money is whats good. How else can one make the money to live a life with all the good stuff, nice cars, high end PCs, a great place to live and a bigger collection of guns then the next person. Everyone should strive for this goal, if that means profiting off death then so be it.
