I give up

How could they even think about reviewing that name?

they do, its gesunder Menschenverstand afair.

From article:

A year ago, Bosch Siemens Hausgeraete (BSH), the firm's consumer products joint venture, filed two applications with the US Patent & Trademark Office for the Zyklon name across a range of home products, including gas ovens

That is just weird....

Usually germans are very careful with these matters, afaik.... This surprises me!

Funny, this is the same forum where I was demonized for saying the past crimes of a nation are still accountable to people today.

Now in a amusing volte face, everyone is quick to condemn the Germans over this sloppy PR stunt.

Staggering!

Come on Curt, wouldn't this forum be boring if people were consistent in their posts ;) ?

It isn't exactly the same thing. First, we're talking about a specific company with a very specific past instead of an entire nation. Second, even without holding Siemens directly responsible for the Holocaust the Zyklon name is still a horribly insensitive one to use.

People aren't responsible for the actions of their nation in the past. Germans are not all responsible for the crimes of the world war. Anybody can easily have this opinion, yet disapprove of this trademark.

Wanting to avoid offending another nation is such a way is by no means accepting any guilt for actions of your own nation in the past.

In that case, why are they paying out 3.5 billion?

Answer that and stay fashionable.

Are you then willing to place blame and guilt for World War 2, and the holocaust, on any of our German posters?

The point you seem to miss, Curt, is disapproving of this trademark due its offensive nature, has nothing to do with guilt of a nations past.

but how many germans today are alive from 1945? it does have to end someday, it was wrong people died and people were punished but someday we have to get over it ( not forget) but move on

Are you willing to answer my question?

No, I am not.

We know why Germany found itself paying out such sums, but is that reason to place guilt on the Germans of today? People, for example, who weren't even alive during the war?

Do you honestly believe these people need feel any guilt?

In which case, who is demanding the 3.5 billion?

If we are to 'move on', as Mr. Pawpaw says, shouldn't we just drop the reparations?

A nice little moral corner you have backed yourselves into....

Well, the point I am making is this:

It's easy to change your tune about the past based on the current situation.

We will all agree that the holocaust was terrible, and this story is awful...etc, etc.

But on the other hand people here leap up and say we should erase the past...

But we still want our 3.5 billion reparations.

Where is the logic?

who wants the 3.5 billion, people who won't be happy even when they get it:( they are searching for something money can't buy

@Curt,
I do not see how I have backed myself into any moral corner. I have stated that I believe it is wrong that you expect Germans today to feel guilt for the World War (2)/the Holocaust.

How does that put me into any corner?

I can understand the name Zyklon being taboo with the chemical. But just to make the word taboo altogether is absolutely ridiculous.
