As a commander, I am very good. I manage my civilization very well. I've been playing this game for years. Yet my biggest problem is, and continues to be, managing technology. I always seem to struggle to keep up and would like some solid advice.

I will use my current Age of Discovery game as an example.

I am playing as Genoa as I prefer the more challenging civs. I expect to fall behind in tech a little bit, but I am really starting to trail. Even Amsterdam, a single city, has advanced several tech levels past me. What am I doing? I keep my research level as high as I can, currently 60%, I have scientist specialists in all the cities that can support them. I build academies every time a great scientist pops up. I build libraries and universities. Yet still I fall behind. I feel like I have been missing some element in my game play. Does anyone have suggestions? I would appreciate your advice.

Cheers!

Sounds Like You Are Playing A MOD. Are you playing on a high difficulty (higher than noble)?

Now I normaly play Prince and I have difficulty keeping up unless I have a good start location. So I will warmonger and get all the money I can through waring. I guess most people will not think this is a good idea because in reality it is not . Guess I could use some help in this area to:lol:.

You might be building too many academies. I usually only build 2 or 3, in cities that look like they'll have a lot of beakers. After that, you might be better off lightbulbing a tech, or making your great scientiets super specialists in your best science city (where you will eventually build Oxford).

The other thing is, make sure you're trading as much as you can. Get to Alphabet as quickly as possible, and try to avoid trading it, but trade everything else, preferably starting with the civs trailing in game score.

Have open borders, to increase your commerce through trade routes.
