Hi all.

Don't ask why ;) I want some pictures of the Spanish galleass, where the colouring of these ships can be seen :mischief:

I've found only one decent - but it's black&white.

All help is appreciated :)

Hehe... actually there was a galleass right after that galley ;) but it had no oars (nor the painting).

But thanks for the effort.

Clarification: I know what the galleasses used to look like, but I want to find a specifically Spanish-looking galleass. I mean, is ther anything special in those - in addition to the sail logo's?

Couldn't find much, just two descriptions.

"A hybrid craft, half sail and half oared. Long and narrow. Could
carry up to 50 guns. Able to operate in calm weather. Galley slaves
were chained to the benches." -Shipwreck database

armada2.jpg

"On the same day, another Spanish ship, the Zuniga, appeared off Liscannor. This was one of the four galleasses which sailed with the Armada, a long narrow ship, powered both by oars and a large square sail."

"4 galleasses, displacing about 1000 tons each"

It seems that the Spanish galleass used a square sail, as opposed to the 'traditional' triangular ones:confused:. It also says they had the ability to 'tow' ships, but I don't imagine that would help you, or would even be unique to these ships in particular.
I also came across a site referring to it as a "flag galleass", but I couldn't tell you what that means.

If your using\need this for what I think you need it for, then I think a surrender animation might be cool.

I can't tell you the color, but from the pic above it seems to be made of a darker, more polished wood. You may want to check the Ulster Museum

I've got some more info on galleasses, but do you mean specifically Spanish, or galleasses in general?

IIRC the principal difference between the Mediterranean and Baltic galleases were that the latter were lower to the water ... ?? (i.e., both had similar rigging; guns ranged along the sides; wide beam to absorb recoil from same).

I know a bit about galleasses. And I think I know the necessary shapes of things. The only thing I need to know is the colouring of the ship.

Or were they plain brown? :)

well, they look brown ;) and if you make them brown they will fit well into civ3 style. I did my ships in unusual colours and now I regret this.

This is obviously very much needed unit for all kinds of mods!

I think the coloring of the Venetian Argosy I posted is accurate ... Of course, most of the colors are in the masts, pendants et. al., and (given Civ scale) if you average out the hull colors, I think you wind up with ... brown :D

Best,

Oz

I've had a look online for Spanish galeasses - found a couple of paintings which include a galeass among other ships, and the hull has been completely brown.

BTW - I found an excellent book from the library. It's perfect. Wroten by a swedish guy in the late 60's:

Björn Landström: Skeppet (Ship).

Very good illustrations and very much information.

Ships ahoy! :mischief:
