I want to hear from Firaxis

You are absolutely wrong. Go to the Elemental : War of Magic website and read some posts by Stardock's CEO concerning some issues they have had on game launch. The chief executive officer of the company responding to his customer's concerns. Compare and contrast to 2Ks handling of the issues with CiV. The difference is night and day.
You are talking about a less mainstream developer/publisher. If Sid Meier didn't sold out, and as well as the current employees of Firaxis being lowly employees under the command of 2k Games, then we wouldn't be in this position of being left out. It would be a different story if the Civilization franchise was still under the control of one company like how games are produced and published by Stardock.

Judging from the polls, about 1/4 to 1/3 of this forum (a forum of die-hard Civilization series loyalists who pre-ordered without a second thought) also does not like the game very much either.

Ah, no. Only 1/4 of those bothering to respond to the polls are unhappy. The rest of us are too busy having fun (with some minor gripes, sure) to bother. May I direct your attention to the following Steam graph:

http://store.steampowered.com/stats/

At the time of writing, there are more people (about 39,000) playing Civ V than playing both versions of CounterStrike put together (29,000). At the peak today, there were more than four times as many people playing Civ V than Left 4 Dead 2.

Like it or not, Civ V is a massive, run-away, giant death robot success.

Plus those of us that are playing with Steam in off-line mode.

The only reason that happened is because Elemental was such an immense failure of epic proportions, that to save his company he had to come out and admit fault. And it wasn't some issues such as "AI leads with archers" or "can't get Magellan achievement" or other minor bugs. He said quite clearly that 30% of buyers couldn't even launch the game without crashing on release. We're talking a game that PC Gamer said "don't buy" and universally got creamed by all reviewers. Brad had to own up, or his company would've no longer existed in the game's market.

Please stop posting about how the game is topping the steam charts. You're comparing a new release to 6months+ old games.

This is an excellent point - that's absolutely terrible evidence to use in an argument in general.

It will be interesting to see how civ5 sales figures look, say, 6 months out.

I think that no one can make a correct analysis on the number of people happy with the game and those unhappy without solid documented evidence. Sure the steam numbers look all happy and pretty but steam is simply recording how many people are playing to game not enjoying it. I'll tell you I personally played the game for a while to try it out and explore all the facets of the game play. I didn't just look at the city screen and say "I quit."

It's unfair to both those who are happy with Civ V and those unhappy to say "well you're in the minority so I'm right lolol," unless an unbiased and anonymous questionnaire was released that could yield an accurate number of opinions on the game from a wide variety of demographics.

Also if we'll all recall to previous Civs: they were also highly debated upon release. And of course Firaxis patched their poopers out to make everyone happy. I say if you hate Civ V stick with Civ IV until Civ V has been patched to tastyness, and if you are happy with Civ V then it should only get better I suppose.

Of course, it's capitalist regimes like 2k that ruin perfectly good game franchises like Civilization by streamlining them and choosing middle-school brats as a target audience.

You know what streamlining is right? Its taking away unnessecary clutter. The only reason I can see people not liking CiV and the only thing I see them complaining about is lack of micro management. Civ has never been about micromanagement and unfortunately for you I doubt they will ever go back to it =)

I'm sorry I didn't take your thread seriously. It was the "I want to hear from 2K" title that did it, just seemed so ludicrous and petulantly demanding. I should have disregarded it and given you the benefit of the doubt

I get where you're coming from. I don't expect you'll hear anything, but I've been in that position before and been just as frustrated. I'm not this time around, but I can empathize.

I hope you do get some kind of feedback like you're looking for, truly. Good luck.

Thank you for the apology. It's nice to see some civility even on an anonymous forum.

I am glad some people, like yourself, enjoy Civ 5. I was so excited about it, I wasted an incredible amount of time reading about it even though there was never any new information when I would look. And I don't even play video games anymore.

And now what do I do with my time, which believe or not, I actually do think is valuable? I complain about Civ 5 on the Internet. I never do stuff like this.

What a waste of life.

I guess I just want someone to tell us (the "unhappy crowd") if they're going to keep my old hobby going or not. Because if they don't, Civ 4 will probably be the last of its kind. It's a great game, but it's full of flaws that could've been improved upon, some of them so glaring now that it's hard to play it knowing it could be so much better, e.g., incorporating all the good things from 5, like limited strategic resources.

Civ 5 is a neat game, but to some of us, it's not really our longtime "strategy game" hobby. And if it doesn't make enough economic sense for any supplier to satisfy that hobby, then it just dies with Civ 4, whose age is showing badly.

If that is going to happen, I want the developers to tell us so I can get over it and stop wasting my time on the internet. Nothing lasts forever. And if my notion of "Civilization" is one of those things, then I'll be sorely disappointed...but at least I'll know it's time to stop hoping and get a new hobby.

Remember that is was the USSR that sent the first human being into space.

Capitalism did not build the western world, the working class built the western world. The worker is exploited every day by capitalists who seek to profit off the sweat and blood of the masses. I would even venture to say that 2k is exploiting Firaxis' good name and the faith of real Civ fans to make more profit off of bullcrap.

That's why I love State Property :)

You've reached perfection when there is nothing faulty left to take out.

I'm pretty sure Civ 5 is a secret plot by pro-hexagonal terrorists to make hexagons replace squares in our society.

Their project to infiltrate our food supply is well underway.

I, for one, welcome our new hexagonal overlords.

There was plenty of micromanagement in Civ! Did you ever tile juggle in Civ 4? Calculating the micro beakers you're losing from using certain tiles and specialist setups, and using your worker to full optimization by pre-chopping and half-roading. Also you say "Civ has never been about micromanagement," and then you say "I doubt they will ever go back to," as if implying that at one point Civ was indeed about Micro, which contradicts the former point you make. Objection your honor.

With a consistent 50,000 playing Civ5 24 hours a day, I don't think a couple hundred people here rate on their radar. ;)

Yes, and that's only the people playing online. How many more are playing single player in offline mode.

Honestly, Civilization V has it's problems BUT it is a finished game, IMO. They just need to rebalanced many of the features, techs, units, and buildings to make it more FUN.

I think this thread is an overreaction.

Man, it's already hard to believe this game was even tested before release, and you're championing that it is finished?

Judging by the attached screenshot, taken 30 seconds ago, the MAJORITY absolutely adores this game, it takes one HELL of a game to top the Steam charts.

Out of 3 million units sold that's actually a pretty sad showing :P

Besides that I'm playing it but I don't like it...so far. I paid $50.00 for it and am trying my best to like it, so I can only imagine there's plenty more like me out there doing the same thing.

What's your proof it wasn't tested? Do you know this for fact?

Well, the easy answer are the many people whose game can't run properly due to technical issues. I am one of many costumers who could play the game after the worldwide release, and can't play it after the first patch (the second one didn't fix it either).

The hard answer are the in-game problems. The tactical AI, the diplomacy, the UI, etc. Debatable issues, but issues nonetheless. The little bugs are more forgivable.
