Ok so I know that if you want to play as the Infernals you have to research infernal pact. However what happens beyond that point? Is your civilization automatically transformed after that tech is researched?

If you're the first to research Infernal Pact, a popup/event will show up asking if you want to take over the Infernals or remain as your own civ. Your civ goes under AI control if you choose to become the Infernals.

Also once you become the Infernal civilization do you have to worry about the AC count? will the assorted nasty creatures that are summoned by a high AC attack my civ?

The first person to research it gets a popup that gives the option to switch if they wish.

In my last game the new event that lets a human player in first place abandon his civ to take over a weaker one. I didn't take the option, but I could have gone from Ethe to Hyborem without ever researching an AV tech.

I have a related question that I mentioned in the bugs thread...

When you decided to accept the challenge to play as the Infernal, where do your guys appear? Are they just dumped somewhere on the map in an open area? Do they appear within the civ that summoned Hyborem? I think this is the way it used to be.

The reason I mention it is that in the last few games I have played, the Infernals are spawned in terrible starting positions. In my last game they were plopped into a six-tile area between Varn Gosam and I. I destroyed them in 3 turns.

There was plenty of other places for them to appear on the huge map - at least 1/3 was open, with the entire Eastern border of the Calabim (the civ who summoned them) open. Yet, they get this lousy starting location.

So, what happens when the human player gets them?

The nasty guys will attack you. I had the first two horsemen appear near me and wipe out a few soldiers before Hyborem could go lay smack down.

The starting location is decided before the popup to change comes, so if they have a terrible starting place (they usually do) then that is where you will start with them...

They're not supposed to. Hyborem has barbarian trait and should be at peace with them.

If they are placed in a spot where your 'old' civilization sees them, you'll get the diplomatic window before the pop-up to switch. In that case, you can gift them some of your cities and ensure a better start.

Speaking of lousy starts, this one game I didn't summon them but they popped out right next to me, almost right next to my Alazkan. One mirror image later, both the starting worker and settler were dead. Okay, I also wiped the rest out in a few turns, but it was obvious they'd never recover even if I had left Hyborem himself alive.

That's only if you become powerful enough to end the Barbarian Truce. Aside from that, though, it's generally beneficial for you to raise the AC, since you're immune to most of its effects thanks to a combination of the Fallow trait and a default racial promotion that renders units "Not Alive."

What about Hyborem's Whisper spell? Does it take over all units in the city as well? Specifically I'm curious if I could "recruit" the Acheron.
Edit: grrr, didn't noticed that you need AV in the target city.

well, if you're at peace with them (the barbarian), you could make it AV, then convert it. :) ..but only if it is one of the three best cities, so that wouldn't work I presume. nice idea though :)

It would have to be VERY early in the game for Acheron's city to pop for you. Improvements, Population, Buildings and Wonders all count toward deciding which 3 are the best, and a Barbarian City will only have the one Wonder going for it most likely, and low population.

I've picked Svartalfar on Boreal map to bring in infernals. The entire map is one big tundra forest and I happen to be the only elven civ. Roads and camps are the only improvements that they can do before bronze working and that's gonna take a while I think  . The only good AV cities are my own, I can always raze them as Hyborem, I'd only need the AV holy city intact. All in all it's worth a try.

I've captured two of my former cities - AV holy city and ex-Capital with the Great Library, but their citizens are normal. Is there a way to convert them into demonic ones?

Except for possibly the AV holy city, it is never in Hyborem's favor to capture cities. Razing them can give you Manes (unless they were good, but then it gives you AC), and you get 6 or so free buildings when you settle a city, all of which are VERY worthwhile to have.

Might want to qualify this with certain wonder producing cities would be more valuable for the wonders then forgetting 3 or 4 manes and or +5 to the AC. But in general yes this is true.
