Ok, here was the scenario. It was real late in the game,(and late at nite :crazyeye: ) and it was me, (france) carth's, india, and arab left. We were playing regicide. I got bored so I thought i'd pull the old weaken the capitol with a nuke and rush in with heavy tanks trick to take out the carth leader. Well, I had right of passage with everyone, so I just parked some troops right next to his capitol for cleanup duty after I let the nukes fly. As it turned out, I didn't even need the extra troops, because 1 nuke destroyed the capitol, hence all his other cities! I thought this was hilarious, so I proceeded to duplicate this with the other two nations, until I was the only one left. Strangely enough, I saw all three of them start popping up new cities after their nations were completely dessimated. Don't ask me how they did this...

I thought the respawn option only respawns them if they were killed off in the ancient era?

No, the AI can respawn in any age. IIRC, the two limits on respawning were that
1) they can only respawn twice and
2) they won't respawn if the unclaimed tiles on the map don't meet certain requirements. I don't know what those requirements technically are, but from what I've seen they're pretty low.

ya, it turned out respawn AI was on. That answers that. Anyways, i'm amazed at the effect of those nukes. I figured it must have wiped out the leaders inside, that is why their whole nation just crumbled. Funny, but probably not good for gameplay.

The details on respawning AI civs:

- AI civs can only be respawned once.
- For an AI civ to respawn, there must be an unclaimed, unoccupied tile on the same continent as the one where it was eliminated (by killing it's last settler or last city) and no other civs can have territory or units within a 5-tile radius of this tile. The tile must also allow cities to be built upon it (i.e., no mountains/water using default rules).

The respawned civ loses the following:
- All embassies/spies
- All units
- All colonies

The respawned civ gets the following:
- 1 city
- 3 defensive units
- 1 offensive unit
- 1 settler/start unit 1
- 1 worker/start unit 2
- All bonus starting units based on difficulty level
- Their gold is increased by starting_gold X 10 (i.e., 100 gold using default rules).

Everything else (culture, at war, techs, etc.) remains unchanged.
