Ideas and Development--Story NES

I'll need a map first, but I'll probably put it up for discussion and then ignore everything said apart from what I agree with anyway.

Some thoughts on the culture of the Big Empire - no matter what culture it has exactly (personally I'm thinking of something vaguely German-like, but we'll see, culture greatly depends on geography), as of the time of the game itself IMHO it should have certain parallels with OTL early 20th century Russian culture. Basically, the culture is not at all stagnant, and in fact is too active and diverse for its own good - there are the occasional religious revivals coinciding with atheism and nihilism, and numerous vanguard political philosophies, most of which, ofcourse, involve destroying everything and building something else. And ofcourse the adherents of the various philosophies conflict with the collapsing, unpopular cultural establishment, the government and each other. And all of this is against the background of political reaction (though not quite on the Russian level, I suppose, if we want something more Europe-like)... It really does create a feeling of the incoming Gotterdamerung, which, I think, is what we need.

I support das' idea of a culture which is too active and diverse for its own part, one which is rapidly heading towards implosion as the powers that be attempt to stop, or atleast stall, the rapidly degenerating state.

This will be quite fun. I think I might want to take up the forces of reaction.

By default there must be a strong, hated, paranoid and reactionary military (military government, or govt dominated by the military) with massive resources. The ideal culture to fit the Big Empire's militarism and nationalism would be a fusion of Germanic and Roman cultures, IMHO.

yay! this sounds great! Although I'm not a good writer, I do like to indulge in the sport. I would definitely join...and I love the idea of 1940's era tech in a random map world - though there should be at least 3 or 4 other nations, like north king said, that are weak enough not to do anything but still existing to write about.

Also, do we have to stick with one character? Can't we write about as many as we want?

I like all of what das had to say a few posts up too, for the culture of the empires. this looks to be a real good story :).

ALSO: north king should put a lock down on the amount of spam allowed...no flooding the thread with useless comments!!!

The Big EMpire should have won some Great War and feel overly secure in its size and power, so the people become pompous and blind to it falling apart.

Yes, I had the same idea, though it MIGHT need a bit of Britishness as well. Then again, Germans and Romans were just as good at colonial adventurism.

I think we can... then again, a very good question, we should consult NK.

Not necessarily, its much more fun if the prey is aware that it is prey. ;) Though its pretty hard to build a huge hegemonic empire without winning lots of big wars...

Well, you might want to throw in the British moral high-mindedness, though, you might just as well not want that at all, if its a decadent empire you wish to create. The British empire didn't really collapse, it just sort of fizzled out.

My point exactly - its just not, you know, Gotterdammerung. I really like that word for some reason.

Anyway, lets wait for the map. I still have an update to work on, though silver's delay is causing trouble...

Most of the domestic (got distracted along the way), but this is off-topic.

We had to sell ourselves out to save our own arses back in 1940 :p
Though I see your point.

From the looks of it, the Big Empire will be a stereotypical dystopian society.. Pretty decent backdrop, I guess. Can't wait for the map.

Depends on what you consider a "stereotypical dystopian society". ;) As the stereotype these days seems to be "fascistocommunist totalitarian a la Blair Arthur Eric", no, it isn't - more like Late Rome/Imperial Russia, liveable but with collapse ahead.

just someone to declare the general political/military happenings of the last months.

As Jason said, though we probably should coordinate this to a certain extent and also have someone write all the important facts down somewhere for future use.

Well true, but if two countries get into a massive war, who decides the winner? Likewise with assassinations, coups, etc.

One just writes a story (though if its unrealistic everybody else flames him on a stake not noticing that he had already edited everything in question). I'll bet you will like it, as it will mean that your overoptimistic plans will no longer break upon contact with harsh reality (no offense intended!). ;)
