I'm going to volunteer next year anyways and I'm pretty sure the draft won't be reinstated in a year and a half.

Have the mods been messing with the poll results? They weren't so syncronised last time I checked ;)

Very interesting..

Earlier in the poll history, the Europeans and US posters had differing views. Now they are syncronised.

Maybe that's just the way things are, but in either event the poll results are interesting.

I see some hypocrisy here. Socialists proclaim they would run from a draft, yet they continue to pump votes into making the government bigger and badder.

At any rate, I'd feel like a sissy if I ran and hid.
At least I'm no hypocrit! Though I'm not a socialist....but maybe you would think so.

Final vote was "I volunteered" since I had full intention of going through with Marine training had I not had so much pain in my back while working out with them. If it worked out fine, I'd be in Parris Island right now.

Of course you mean between the U.S posters and the rest of the world - the voting depends on when people come onto the boards - when the hippy CFCers who are hanging out in hippy communes in India start logging on later this evening I expect another dramatic turn in the poll :) . There wasn't an MBT option but I voted anyway- although the option I choose didn't really fit my position. :(

A was drafted, but got out of the "normal" service and did an un-armed serrvice, tiained as a fire-fighter. Mush more usefull, as I don't expect our country to go to war anytime soon.

As a draft, if we were at war, I would (1) volunteer if I belived in the war, or (2) avoid the draft if I did not.

And when you think about it, in a democracy if the People have the right to deciede, why have a draft, the people will volunteer(vote for the war) if they belive in it. A draft is a way to force people into something they did not want - more like a dictatorship.

May I ask why not, rmsharpe?

From everything that you see, it just looks like a really pathetic part of the world.

In Korea or even the Phillipines (particularly Manila) there is the comforts of Western civilization.

Just curious....given the big supporter you are of the operations there. For myself...there have been a lot of times where I just want to kick so much ass over there...especially Afghanistan.

I also don't believe I have the patience to put up with these guys. One of the guys in Abu "Grab" (as I heard Al Gore call it on Limbaugh) raped ten year olds. Well, if I was there, I tell you, they'd be wishing that they'd be in a naked pyramid than what I'd do to them.

Soldiers or prisoners?

Anyway, if stationed in Kuwait City..we can enjoy modern American rights as well....like the right to really cheap gas....and a bunch of fast food chains and the like...I think I'd like to go to a Gulf state one day anyway...might as well get paid by Uncle Sam to carry around a gun doing it.

Of course I would serve if I was drafted! I'm no coward, and fighting for this country would be my highest honor...however, you won't see me rushing to volunteer either.

Some interesting responses. For those who answered no, is it specifically to do with
iraq, or would you refuse doing military service altogether??.

I suppose I should clarify, I would serve if the sitting President wasn't a total idiot and there was a clear and present danger to my country, however neither of those conditions appear to be fulfilled at this point in time.

Live in the USA, if I was drafted for the war in Iraq, I'd be packing my bags and heading to Canada. I do not believe in that war, and would refuse to fight in it.

the Canadian customs officials will send you back

Currently stationed at the IAF HQ, going on 8 months out of 36 mandatory service.
This post made immediately after 50 or so hours of guard duty. Yay.

I'm all for mandatory service, I'd like to see it in this country. But herding up cannon fodder to be sent to where they don't belong, I will stand against.
