If you could add great works what would they be?

I would make a mod that plays Africa from Toto when discovering Kilimanjaro, then :P

As far as great works go, Kashmir? Great Artist: Jimmy Page (as he wrote the riff and that's the most recognizable part of the song).
Rocking In The Free World? Great Artist: Neil Young
Black? Great Artist: Eddie Vedder/Or Whole Pearl Jam
Or every iconic song of the 90s

Actual songs probably won't be in, you can't mod in music but I can still put a great work in with that title, I'll look into that painting.

Spoliarium by Juan Luna
Spoiler :
Juan_Luna_Spoliarium.jpg

I've seen that one before, If I can that's totally going in.

Great Works of Writing
- The Lord of the Rings (J.R.R. Tolkien)
- The Art of War (Sun Tzu)
- The Athenian Constitution (Aristotle)
- Nineteen Eighty-Four (George Orwell)
- On the Proofs of Gods Existence (St Thomas Aquinas)
- The Ninety-Five Theses (Martin Luther)
- The Communist Manifesto (Karl Marx)
- The Shining (Stephen King)
- The Prince (Machiavelli)

Great Works of Art (movies?)
- Citizen Kane (Orson Welles)
- The Godfather (Francis Ford Coppola)
- Titanic (James Cameron)
- Gone With The Wind (Margaret Mitchell)
- Neon Genesis Evangelion (Hideaki Anno) (because screw all this western crap lol)

Great Works of Music
- Ring of Fire (Johnny Cash)
- Sabotage (Beastie Boys)
- Ahead By A Century (Tragically Hip)
- Gangnam Style (Psy) (?)
- Losing My Religion (R.E.M.)
- Yesterday (The Beatles)
- Over The Rainbow (Judy Garland)

Those are probably the highest priority i'd have for adding. Need a bit more modern stuff added in. The movies thing also struck, I understand why they didn't add them since movie tech would come so late in the game but I saw no reason why they could not be included in Great Works of Art. And yes I know most of the stuff is Western but i've been socialized this way, would need someone who is knowledgeable in non-Western Great Works to add some in there for other civilizations, as i'd probably just butcher it.

Cheers.

Meowth, while I appreciate the suggestions for more Japanese writing, I must disagree with Makura no Soshi. It's a book of anecdotes, and I do not see it as literature per se. Certainly not in the same vein as the Genji Monogatari or even Pride and Prejudice.

Also, correct me if I'm wrong, but I was taught that the Kojiki and Manyoshu were the oldest surviving works detailing Shinto practice. I would hope that they would avoid religious texts for all religions.

However, I do have suggestions!

Towazugatari, by Lady Nijo (The Confessions of Lady Nijo)
Sasameyuki, by Tanizaki Junichiro (The Makioka Sisters) (This is 20th century, BTW.)

In A Grove, by Akutagawa Ryunosuke
Rashomon, by Akutagawa Ryunosuke

I have done it! I put a great work in the game: Spolairium by Juan Luna (art). I'm going to make a tutorial now.

Literature
"Makura no Soshi" (The Pillow Book) by Sei Shonagon
"Iroha" by Kukai
"Xi You Ji" (Journey to the West) by Wu Cheng'en
"Sanguo Yanyi" (Romance of the Three Kingdoms) by Luo Guangzong
"Decameron" by Giovanni Boccaccio

Possibly replace "Macbeth" by William Shakespeare with "Romeo and Juliet" by William Shakespeare? :)

Paintings
"Grande Odalisque" by Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres
"Boulevard Montmartre" by Camille Pissaro
"Neptune Offering Gifts to Venice" by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo

Possibly replace "Portrait of Bindo Altoviti" by Raphael Sanzio with "School of Athens" by Raphael Sanzio?
Please replace "Water Lilies (1916): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Monet_Water_Lilies_1916.jpg by Claude Monet with "Water Lilies (1919)" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:WLA_metmuseum_Water_Lilies_by_Claude_Monet.jpg by Claude Monet?
Possibly replace "L'Absinthe" by Edgar Degas with "The Dance Class" by Edgar Degas?
Possibly replace "Bar at the Folies-Bergere" by Edouard Manet with "Olympia" by Edouard Manet?
Possibly replace "Luncheon of the Boating Party" by Pierre-Auguste Renoir with "Dancing at the Moulin de la Galette" by Pierre-Auguste Renoir?
Please replace "Portrait of a Man in a Turban" by Jan van Eyck with "The Arnolfini Wedding" by Jan van Eyck?

Music
Either "Symphony No. 8 (Unfinished)" or "Ave Maria" by Franz Schubert?
"The Four Seasons" by Antonio Vivaldi

Please replace "Eine Kleine Nachtmusik" by W.A. Mozart with "Die Zauberflote" (The Magic Flute) by W.A. Mozart? :D :D :D

Hmm for Franz Schubert, his Quintet in C Major is far more influential, and is regarded as one of the greatest piece of music ever made by many. That single piece of music is so loved, some musicians have had one of its themes written on their tombstone. But unfortunately his unfinished symphony and ave maria got the popularity vote, and in the end that seems to be what matters.

I hope you guys know Its not possible to ADD sounds to the files through modding so if I add great works of music they won't have the actually music, their most likely have the music that plays with great works of art. its possible to add sounds but you have to replace existing ones, which I won't do.

I've already said this a few times but are you sure this is an issue? The name of the author and a short quote for demonstration is definitely fair use as long as the mod isn't commercial.

I am not sure; I did consider fair use as well. 30 seconds is it for a recorded piece of work?

Not sure if it's already in but I'd like to see:
Great Work of Writing
Song's of Innocence / Song's of Experience - William Blake
It would fit perfectly with the expansions focus on Industrialization onwards.

You could even go one step further and include one of his prints as a great work of art.

That Makes since i guess... but remember you can't add music files via modding so its not the music i'm worried about its the paintings.

Great Works of Art (movies?)

As plays are Great Works of Writing, I guess movies would be too... although they do need art and soundtrack too... ugh, tricky.

Just add the Hollywood wonder with one slot for each type and a theming bonus for having them all be same civ and same era!

Ok, a few more then:

Art:
- The Persistence of Memory (Salvador Dali)
- The Treachery of Images (René Magritte)
- Guernica (Pablo Picasso)

Music:
- Jailhouse Rock (Elvis Presley)
