...and
1) Western nations were at your doorstep only days away from taking you down
2) You had a ready arsenal of biological and chemical weapons (and maybe a couple of nukes)
3) You had the means to deliver your arsenal to nearby enemies (Israel and maybe Europe...if SCUDs can reach that far)
4) Your enemies had no way of defending themselves against such a threat (Patriot missles were a flop)

Nuking Israel would be my #1 priority. Then I would try to get every weapon I got into New York, Washington, etc. Then I would wait for the U.S. nuke missles to send me and the rest of Iraq to see Allah.

I would lose the moustache...:D

I would curse my luck that they invaded when they did and didn't let me build an even bigger arsenal of destruction to rain down on Israel and the West.

I would then realize that I was being hunted through the hills with my communications network in a shambles and that any order I gave on the run would only result in a fraction of the damage I could have done if my nation wasn't invaded.

I would shoot myself and make the world a better place.

I would get down on the floor, put my head between my legs, and kiss my arse goodbye.

Scud could not hit Europe; it is a short range missile. The Iraqi development program for the longer ranger ones was curtailed by a small matter of thousands of tons of bombs from the sky.
Israel does have the Hetz anti-missile missile, which is slightly better than the Patriot.

I would shave the mo, get urgent plastic surgery, and become a houseboy at Bill Gates' place.:D

From a strategic point of view, I'd invade Iran and finish the job of the Iran-Iraq war. Begin occupation of Kuwait, Syria, Jordan, and Lebanon, and demand the Jews leave Isreal...or else.

If the Americans try to stop the invasions and occupations, I'd cut off oil to the U.S. and their allies, and on any invasion from any front, use "the gas" and some SCUDs to deal with them.

Use the money I gain from the invasions to buy some Taepo-Dong 2 missiles from the North Koreans. Taepo-Dong 2 missiles have the potential to hit (from Baghdad) about as far as Paris to the west, Helsinki to the north, Mogadishu from the south, and Islamabad from the east, keeping myself in power for a few more years...

Afterwards, buy Taepo-Dong 3 missiles from North Korea after their development in 2004. Begin stockpiling Taepo-Dong 3 ICBMs and begin the second Cold War.

Of course, I wouldn't do that.

What makes you think that you'd be able to accomplish such a feat given the fact that you were a better strategic position in the 80's than you are in today?

I agree to DinoDoc, invading other countries is not an option for Saddam. The only thing he could do would be sending some missiles (if he really has them) to Israel or Saudi Arabia/Kuwait. But that would be pure terror attacks, he won't able to archieve anything besides killing people.
Maybe Saddam would do that...I would not though.

I would contribute $14.8 million in cash through various exile organizations to the coffers of the Republican National Committee and a further $6.5 million to individual candidates in swing seats for the Senate.

Seems to work for the Chinese.

If I were Saddam, I would do absolutely nothing save order my army to defend Iraq, which of course would be futile, but a leader is obliged to try. Then I would surrender with dignity, showing to all the world that I was in fact bullied by an out of control, overbearing America when in fact I was not a danger to the region but a victim of U.S. propaganda.

And I think it would have much of the effect that I would desire.

Luckily, though, I'm not Saddam, so I don't have to lose sleep over the murder of Kurds, or the death of my nation's youth to starvation because I refuse to comply with the conditions to have sanctions removed.

If I was the ageing dictator Saddam,

I would act like a real leader and relax my stance in order to have
sanctions lifted, there would be no backlash from his followers...
This dictator managed to convince the Iraqi people that the
gulf war was a victory for Iraq? Hmmmm.

I would also open up to the world media and tow the UN line,
to avert the impending American punitive action.
Even Saddam must see that the US is itching for more action
after the campaign in the Afghan zone.

(America's current world stance is a situation I personally find worrying.)

Despite all the West's overtures at not being an enemy of the
common Iraqi people, any attack will generate more hate for
the USA and it's allies, from the other 'rouge states'.

And despite the outcome, Saddam will have won...
Because the future in the Iraqi region will be of his
vision of war and not of our vision of peace...

Well, the arsenal that was given to the fictional Saddam was pretty vast compared to his current (and real) arsenal. Read the first post, and you'll get what I mean.

I don't think Saddam Hussein is a tenth that strong...

"I don't think Saddam Hussein is a tenth that strong..."

Hence, why is he worth the lives of our Allied servicemen?

Precisely.

Saddam was a threat in 1991 because the West had supplied him anything he wanted short of nukes to fight Iran...he had chemical weapons and hell it ain't too hard for a State to produce biological weapons.

In fear our troops equiped themselves with gasmasks etc!

What did we get...the SCUD.

After 10 years of sanctions and airstrikes at all suspected military authorities NOW our leaders tell us he is a major menace...

I want Saddam removed so we can get the humanitarian supplies to the Iraqi people and help them rebuild their country this time with a democratic foundation. I want to see the pariah state changed into a model of democracy...THAT should be our aim, that is a worthy use of our armed forces.

But I fear it won't be so :(

I don't recall the west giving Saddam a lot of support. There was some support perhaps but not too much.

Anyway thoes of you who suggested Saddam to allow reporters in so people will be mad about the US - remember what happened to Stalin's image when the truth about him was revealed. Saddam won't take that chance.

Maybe try playing on chieftain for a while to get the hang of things.:D
Sorry couldnt help it.

Seriously resign and let someone else lead. but he would never do that.

I would bolster my defenses and lay waste to any land around Iraq which could be used as staging areas for an attack. As long as I can hold out long enough the war might beome to costly for the Allies.

Costly? In 1991 the US army lost less people then in other years. Since then Saddam's army because even weaker. The US alone can destroy his entire army within less then a weak. If he'll try to set up defenses they'll simply bomb them, using their air supiriority to prevent him from doing anything about it.
