The U.S. State Department wants to deploy a cruel new weapon in the War on Terror: the Internet troll.

Wired’s Spencer Ackerman reports that a project called Viral Peace will use harassment and irrelevant comments—the troll’s favorite tools—to disrupt jihadi forums and online communities. Eventually, the hope is, this tactic will hurt Islamist extremists’ virtual recruiting. “Think of it as strategic trolling, in pursuit of geopolitical pwnage,” writes Ackerman.
I realize I haven't had much time here to enjoy your bubbly personalities and ruin your fun w/ my moderator shillelagh, but when I saw this news item, I immediately LOL'd and then thought of CFC. :)

Hope that you are all well, etc...

Ah finally a job

Why doesn't the US Government just spam all these sites with 5kchan excerpts?

Oddly enough, I think this story explains how the 'Tavern' came into being....

Joke all you want but I'd be far from surprised if some posters were sockpuppets paid to defend the "good name" of the US military and/or government. The State Department is late to the game, if they are indeed starting it only now, the DOE and the three-letter agencies have been at it for some time. And there are plenty of puppets for hire on the pay-sheets of private corporations too. And other governments. And so on... This forum shouldn't merit such attention, but hey, its public money to spend...

As for specifically targeting any kind of religious fanatics and expecting it to work... it's so idiotic that it smells like a cover story just to get funding for a much broader propaganda operation. But what the hell, it can be mere idiocy.

Actually, innonimatu, i'd believe the opposite: that there were planted lefties here to stir the majority up in regards to things like the military and the government. It's more their style.

'Course in saying that, it does occur to me that we have a few posters that are so vitrolic towards the military that they COULD be plants to promote sympathy for the military from such haters. Go figure.

This is not true at all. This forum contains no "sockpuppets", and it is unbearingly obvious that you are paranoid.

I would advise everyone to relax and ignore "innonimatu"'s post. He is clearlynterrrorizing the minds of innocent, good-hearted Americans who drink Coca-Cola and drives Fords.

That, of course, begs the question of who is planting the lefties around! The shadow international lefty organization based in the lowest levels Moscow subway, directed by Marx's ghost and Stalin's zombie?
The end of the USSR is really a great inconvenience, isn't it?

Nah, if you see any "lefty" hostility towards branches of the US state apparatus it's just a reaction to their actions abroad. I even dare say that applies to any hostility from any imaginable political quadrant. Stomping around the world meddling into other people's business tends to cause that. Just go back isolationist and it'd end instantly.

Doing so is the duty of our glorious nation. Do not question our actions.

Considering my experiences on these and similar Forums, I find you can't get average people to listen, pay attention or reason with you. How you might think to influence the tiny closed-minds of fundamentalist jihadi extremists is just beyond my admittedly limited imagination.

As for the idea that some on these Forums are agent-provocateurs of the Left or Right is just nonsense. Why would any decently-funded organization bother to care what we think or say? Would they even be aware that we exist? People, get real!

Since when is trolling about changing minds? Since when is trolling productive? It is destructive. About destroying the quality of discussion for one's own amusement.

Anyway, hilarious!
But I don't see why this idea is supposed to be so dumb. A troll army is as far as I can see in deed the most powerful weapon to destroy a community. If you just attack the website, a new one can be set up where the old community meets again. If you destroy the community itself, there is no salvaging. And the disappointing and frustrating experience of massive trolling may also discourage one from the Internet discussion business altogether.

If I see my community seriously threatened by a troll flood, then I temporary disable registrations. *puff* problem gone. The threat will disappear after some time, then the normal bussiness can go on.
And like said, you'll not get into the core, since these are probably password protected invite only communities.

And what Glassfan meant is, I guess, rather that he can't understand how the forums could influence Jihadists seriously (in a pro-Jihad way), so doubting the overall relevance for recruiting.

They could easily create various incumbent accounts, though. And if they are not the boring dead-obvious trolls but more subtle and clever and as a consequence also more dangerous because not as easily ignored (which I would assume if you are getting paid for it), many admins/moderators may lack the necessary effort and sensitivity to effectively weed out the bad crops which rotten the community from within.

I think this measure is also not targeted at the core, but at the exurbs which attract new followers and lead old ones to the militant core.

Ah makes sense, my bad.

I would be willing to do this even if the pay is minimum wage.
