I'm a little concerned...

Over there!
Is it just me, or does Civ5 feel a little...light?

Now, dont get me wrong - I am antsy with anticipation for this next version, and the talk about full modder support is a huge, HUGE relief.

But...and its hard to put a finger on it...does Civ5, SO FAR, feel a little thin? A little shallow in depth of social mechanics? A little over-focussed on combat?

I know that its early days yet, but anyone else feel some apprehension?

That because they have not talked in detail about what replacing civics, the tech tree and all that stuff, as they have mainly been focused on combat/diplomacy/steam up to this point, hopefully they will talk about this stuff at E3

True, exactly true - theres a lack of info so far, certainly.

I dunno, but my gut feeling.......here's hoping though!

I've had that feeling for a while as well. I'm imagining that they'll have some new information to show at E3. If their presentations consists of 'Yay hex tiles!' I'll be sadly disapointed. Does anyone know the schedule for E3? Can we expect civ info right away on Monday, or do they wait a couple of days to present?

Yah, I wasn't blown away by the hex change, though I'm not opposed to it by any means.

I just get the feeling that the combat system is distracting them a little from Civs core appeal - the depth and breadth of its social/economic models. Sure, PG was a great game, but....Ive bought and played Civ since Civ2, and PG never had that kind of a hold on me.

It's natural to have an expectation that the game is going to be more light given their latest civ offering was civilization revolutions and it was considerably lighter a game than civ4 and its expansions, and also Colonization.

They will no doubt have taken some of their lessons learned from civrev and apply them to civ5. It's also likely that many of the people who worked on civrev are working on civ5. IMO some of the early artwork for civ5 looks like it is coming from the same artist who did some of the civrev stuff, for example.

Just how much civrev will affect the game design for civ5 is unknown. Very very little is actually known about civ5 yet. Civfanatics have an amazing ability to extrapolate a huge deal of speculation, assumptions and info from what little we've been given, but the fact is we have practically no information yet.

I'm amused... so many people are complaining that they've made too *many* changes.

Completely redoing the combat system.
The map.
The diplomacy system.
The economic system (no more commerce, no more sliders).

I say don't stress yourself out worrying untill there is actually more info about the game.;)

Those are changes to existing features. And are cool in their own right. But I think the OP, and others, may be wondering if there will be any new "groundbreaking" features. I think there will be a few big features that are yet to be revealed. I think Firaxis has alluded to it in press releases.

I don't think Civ5 will be light. But if I was still going to buy it, I wouldn't want it to be as fat as BTS if that meant that the core game might suffer. I thought BTS went over the top. I'da been happy with just a few items of fluff, IF the MAF error had been thoroughly fixed.

Well they have already stated that the UI programmer is the same guy that did the UI for CivRev, so no doubt he is taking the good parts of the CivRev interface and using those ideas for Civ5.

Plus the general art team is going to be the same for any game Firaxis makes, Dorian Newcomb has been working at Firaxis since 2000, so of course the art work is going to have a similar look and feel, but by the sounds of it, the new Civ5 engine will give the art team alot more tools to create great visuals.

Information on the game has been coming out at a trickle. It's about three months from launch, and we know less about it than some games that are still half a year from release. We have a handful of screenshots (less than twenty, if I'm not mistaken), a list of civs, a few press releases, mostly rehashing a few points about the changes we do know about, and... that's about it, really. We know that there have been some significant changes made, but not much about how those changes are fully going to work. Check the list - we know of three technologies in the game, and basically no units other than the unique civ units. At this rate, trying to guess what we're going to get in September will be a full-time job. Unless an open beta occurs (with a fairly liberal NDA) or Firaxis really opens the floodgates, half of the game info may still be shrouded in mystery until someone actually opens up the game box and installs the full-blown release.

I also have concerns about the game's depth, but I'm going to give it a little more time before I decide. I think this week is going to reveal a LOT of new information. We will have many things to talk about next weekend for sure, for good or ill.

Since Civs are strategy/management games, I expect both aspects to be fairly equal in terms of fun and depth. But the combats were always boring and not very tactical to say the least. I think that's the reason why the developers are mostly communicating around the new combat system. Because everybody knows a Civ game couldn't possibly screw up the management aspect. Right?
