I'm new...

i just noticed, my auto save files are like 5x as big...like some are 1.14mb the save games i dl'd are like 75kb and such....

But yes i can start up a new game and play.

You have what we call Vanilla Civ3. You can only open saved games from version 1.29f of same. If you decide to download any mods, make sure they are for Civ3 1.29f and not for PTW or C3C.

can you please help me find something i can play by going to load game....none of the ones i have downloaded worked...so can you help me please

and can you also tell me how i can record my own so someone can watch and give me tips...I just played like a whole game for like 1 1/2 hours or maybe 3...lol and i thought it was autosaving all the time but it wasnt and i saved once at the end when i was about to lose, and that's all=/

Update: It let me load this one...
http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=81351&page=133&pp=20&highlight=civ3+vanilla

I loaded it but i was thinking i would get to watch someone play from start to finish....and win and such...is this not possible...i dont wanna play someone else's game

There is no way to 'watch' a game. The best you can get is someones saved game at a certain point in the game. You might try the Hall Of Fame section for some downloadable end games. 1.5 or 3 hrs is nothing... i have spent 180+ hrs on one game before. A standard map might take 40+ hrs. This is a time consuming game and you just need to get used to it and enjoy the time you spend. You learn by playing and asking questions.

Good Luck AO. I found it best to go to the War Academy and to the forum and look for discussions on strategies. You can pick up an overview at the WA and can find helpful little bits in the forum.

so how can you guys give suggestions about my playing if you can't watch it....

I was gonna try to maybe frap my playing...but i can't get fraps to work for civ3....Figure's it works for every game I have except civ3....

There's just so much I don't understand about this game, I don't understand how to stop civil disorder, I don't understand how to get gold, how to know when I can finish off a city and take them over....and other stuff=/

oh yea and is it possible to Talk to the ai like to trade with them w/o seeing one of their units and clicking take me to your leader or w/e?

Do you know how to post a screenshot? That helps a lot of to see a picture for those of us who can't pull up the save. As far as civil disorder goes there are 3 types of faces.
1. Happy = good
2. Content = neutral
3. Unhappy = bad
If you have more unhappy faces than happy what you can do is move the lux slider (happy face slider underneath the science slider on F1). This will adjust the citizens moods. Once you have more happy than unhappy you'll avoid disorder. IE if you have 1 happy and 2 sad faces. If you move the slider from 0% to 10% or 20% you will increase the happiness. If you road a luxury to the cities it will also increase happiness.

You get gold by building roads (especially on rivers). Try to develop good tiles. Some are better than others. IE some grassland squares have 2 food and 1 shield. They are better to mine than a grassland with 2 food and 0 shields. Try to irrigate wheat and cows. They are the best tiles in your city limits. When you view the city screen make sure your citizens are working the developed squares.

As far as meeting people once you've met them you will see them on your F4 screen and can dial them up whenever you want.

:coffee:  :D Alpha the most important thing to do is to forget just about everything you learned and applied in RTS gaming and start from a blank slate. The difference between civ and any rts is like the difference between "Old Maid" and "Monopoly". There is no cross over lessons. This is a game of true strategy and endurance.

I'd have to disagree, confused713. I started 5 months ago with pretty much the same experience as AO (RTS like Wc3, SC, used to learn in replays and commentaries, etc.) and although it wasn't exactly what I needed, the experience in troop placement and empire/ressource management was very considerable

For the replay format, there is no such thing in Civ, but if you save every, say, 10-20 turns, a lot of people here (including myself) wil help you before you can blink.

However, there is the GOTM spoilers that come close, and the War Academy's very excellent articles, notably Bamspeedy's.

You might want to read through a few training SG's such as TGOMTG and GK2 (easy to find in the SG forums, page 1 or 2 almost always) and post questions on things you don't get why they do.

A few tips à la volée:
-Don't ... DON'T build wonders until you've reached the point where you don't actually need them - that means in, maybe say, a month or 2. I can't stress this enough. 400 shields for the pyramids is 7 built granaries. Plus the load of time lost building it, you'll end up having not much for your money, and having it in the early middle ages when much other things would help you.
-Build offensive units over defensive ones - you can attack anything coming in your territory with archers, but can't conquer an ennemy with spearmen for example.
-Don't build temples. Do build granaries.
-Trade techs for techs, and arrange it so you can re-sell the techs you bought - 2 for the price of one (and sometimes much more !).
-Playing AGR and IND civs will make it easier on you to start with, because they get nice bonuses you don't have to worry about when using.
-A worker built on the exact turn a city grows will not drop it one size.
-Build cities near lakes and rivers, that way they won't need an aqueduct and you just saved 100 shields.

I went from chieftain to Deity with those (only those for a while anyways) since Feb when I got the game. And btw, we can help with your game without seeing it because we know how everyone (including ourselves) first reacted and played. It's like saying to a noob in Wc3 "use the move button to make a surround" - they all don't use it but should. Same thing here.

Addendum: This article explains a lot of things that are awesome to know and will really push your game up a level or 2 when you reach understanding of it (I mean, in game application; it's plain english you can read and understand as is ;))

And I forgot the most important: never automate workers, never let the governer rule a city, never let the advisor pick your tech. Make many workers, road a lot, have a plan and research/produce towards it.

Ill try to post screenshots and autosaves here when my game gets done, im pretty sure im about to lose been playing since my last update...Everyone is almost on my side and we are trying to kill 1 guy but its like...i have samurai they have guns and it's messed up...i dont know how to get guns:( i have gunpowder and the only tech they have that i dont is military tradition.....Physics...navigation....What do i do to get gun powder?

My guess is you probably don't have saltpeter. You need to get or hook up saltpeter.
Two monster techs for humans are Military Tradition (gets cavalry but needs saltpeter) and Steam Power(economy booster and frictionless movement of troops but needs coal and iron)

There is no need to wait until the end of the game to post a save. The best time is when you are perplexed or are wondering how you are doing so far. Just be sure to mention the version in the post so others will know what to load it with. One posted saved game will generate lots of suggestions and feedback for further discussion.

Okay i dunno if i can post 2 or not but you will be able to tell which is which or w/e....This is for civ 3 1.29f

First should be of My starting spot right as game loads.---Edit...It's just a pic lol

The second should be of where i got to after time went by....I really didn't have to fight but there was no more land to take and i wasnt getting anything new really, so i got bored=(

AO - Civ is a complex game. There is no right way to play - each game is different and you can find different ways to play. The problem is that everyone has a different set of experiences and different level of understanding. Bottom line is you learn something and then you learn some more. If you don't have the patience for this it is the wrong game. If you do, nothing comes close!

So, a start. Took a look at your start position. You have two workers in about the worst possible positions. One worker is working on a mountain which has very little value particularly at the start of the game. The other is working on a jungle. No value right now. The best point on your start position is the wheat to the NorthEast.
Odds are you have someone on it. Ok this is complicated. You double-click on the city and you will see where your residents are working. These are different from the workers we discussed above. If you road a point where someone is working you get extra commerce which can be used for gold or knowledge. Effective use of workers is one of the most important things particularly as the game goes on.

This also begs the question of how you got two workers at the start of the game. Very unusual.

That's a beginning.

Can't open the second file.

wasnt the very start, like 2 turns later or like 10...I made 1 worker to start with instead of warrior....what would i need warrior for at beginning of game=p

Few questions:

1. What are some things that are good to build...I.E Temple, Granary, courthouse, Those things that take a lot of turns..., and those type of things...

2. Should i always give my neighbors what they want like they say something like "give me world map and 27g" -Should i always give?

3. If i make a colony on iron and a road connecting to a town is that all i have to do to get iron?

4. Is there any specific order i should get the new techs. or w/e they are called Bronze working alphabet-those things

From a quick look at the game... most of your cities are suffering from a lack of food and cannot grow well and you don't have enough workers. Figure on 1.5 workers per city.
