I'm stuck on Noble

One thing to remember about city placement is that overlap is okay. If the FC overlap a few squares then you lose a couple squares but having more cities will definitely help overall.

I did it! I won my first domination victory. I had ten cities building nothing but military units, I conquered the other continent with massive stacks of Infantry and Artillery. The biggest factor I think was more cottages, I'll start another game today and see if I can do it again. I have a feeling it may have been a fluke win, I had every religion on my continent, and both of my neighbors were push overs.

Hey! Congrats!. Okay, you won your first domination victory. Here's a really good tip to start doing that on a permanent basis. This strategy helped me to secure confident military wins on Monarch when I was starting out on that difficulty level.

Always aim to wipe out another civ before the ADs.

If you get your grubby little hands on a second capitol (which mostly is on choice locations) it really will help the rest of your game.

It will not work every time you try it but you will learn when it is a good choice to rush and when it's not. And more importantly so, you learn how to be effiecent and quikly get an army marching. Let that whip crack and the sound of falling trees rumble through the forest.:king:

Gore, I think you are suffering from a lack of focus. As my grandmother used to say (in her growly, cave bear way) you must begin with the end in mind.

So the first step when you reach the end of the early game is to decide how you want to win. The "end of the early game" is hard to pinpoint, but it is usually the point in time after all of the good, accessible land is settled.

Spoiler :
I acknowledge, however, that in some games it is very hard to focus on the long-term goal when Shaka is next door. My advice there is to beat him soon, because it will be always harder to beat him (or Monty, or Toku, or Napoleon, or Cathy ...) later. They will always attack you when you are busy doing something else.

If you are going for conquest, domination, or space, you will need to work on your technology and production capabilities. For cultural, you need to build wonders and work on your religion. For diplomatic, you need to mix warfare with skillful diplomacy so that you are big enough to be eligible for the vote -- but you can't get there without breaking some eggs, as it were.
