NEW CENTERS OF TRADE. Cairo, Abdul Ghafaar Sultanate. The Mediterranean Sea saw a flurry of shipyard building in Provence, Lower Egypt, and Andalusia, resulting in the first three centers of trade in the post-1700 world. The owners of these centers of trade enjoy some of the benefits of the centers, but if they are, and others are, to prosper, many will need to begin dropping money into trade. [OOC: These CoTs came free. Future ones have a cost. See bottom of post for more.]
CIVIL WAR IN CHINA. Beijing, Qing Empire. After years of mismanagement, provinces of the Qing Empire, long under Manchu domination, have risen up against the ruling dynasty to restore the dethroned Ming Dynasty. Despite the initial military actions, both sides are expected to dig in this year and begin major operations in 1723. The government and the rebels are reaching out to foreigners for assistance in China's wars, but it is unlikely that anybody will be able to provide much assistance. Shame, since a unified Chinese ally would be a boon to any empire.
POLISH UNREST. Warsaw, Kingdom of Poland. In Poland, the government is facing pressure by restless city dwellers and rural populations over the government's perceived lack of action this year, with local elites beginning to mobilize as they see the government weakening.
SCRAMBLE FOR AFRICA? Senegal, Kingdom of France. As French troops seized Senegal and Guinea, most of the world can't help remembering the diplomatic conflict between the two sultanates of Egypt and Cordoba over proposed Egyptian expansion in West Africa. France and Cordoba, both controlling major trade centers in the Mediterranean world, are very evenly matched in terms of economic power, potential shipbuilding rates, land power, and naval power, with Cordoba edging out over France in army power and France winning out in potential naval power.
Of course, one must remember that Bulgaria's shipyards churned out two more sixth rates and a third rate. With Cordoba's exit from the Mediterranean, Greater Bulgaria has become the naval master of the Mediterranean for now. The Bulgarian Navy is the second largest in the world, being edged out slightly by Great Britain.
