Improving on Monarch level

You should look at "S Col" for BTS space colony victories. "Space" is for old vanilla and warlords games (where the game was won by launching the ship, not launching and waiting for it to arrive, like in BTS).

@Jivilov: I had the same experience like you and your friend in my early games: I was just running into either a loss or a Space Race or a Time/Score victory because I didn't know how to play properly. However, I believe that only works on the lower levels because the game just lets you win if you play long enough. On the higher difficulties you simply lose.

The second long phase of the game - after my three wars - wasn't boring at all. There are so many things you can improve and think about to get faster to your space ship:

Of course that makes the game lasting a lot longer and is perhaps not enjoyable for everyone but playing a Space Race this way is very different and much more fun and satisfying than a Space Race as the last resort.

Well, some of us like a little crisis management...

But seriously, I'm not a very competitive player and it seems that Emperor is my own level of incompetence. Wish all of you well and shall take a gander at your games now and then. You guys are indeed awesome. Cheers!

So, I'm trying my hand on a first Monarch game with 17AI/small map/standard speed.

I went a bit cheese and took the Inca for some fun early rush goodness. I took out a first rival, was on my way to finish off the second one when I got in a bit of an issue with his last city. Anyway, long story short, while I was doing this (chumping some Swordmen to finish my rush on his fortified position) my dear Charlemagne neighbor (smack to my East) proceeded to spy bomb me. In one single turn he destroyed ALL my 3-4 developed cottages. Now, I have not seen the Great Wall being built and I am not sure WTH happened. I actually had some spy points on him.

What could I have done to prevent this? As anyone been the victim of such well though out attack by the Ai?

That sounds very unusual. AIs do some spy-attacks in very late game, but your description sounds like early game, probably before Alpha, so I'm not sure if Spies were even available. If what you say is right, it must have been an advanced date already, because only producing enough to sabotage 4 Cottages already takes an AI very very many turns, I've actually never been a victim of any attack before lets say 1 AD.

Clearly before 1AD most other AIs did not have Alpha I was one of the few with it and was still (late)Quechua rushing when it happened. I can only imagine that he got a great spy from building TGW and used on me. A spy also succeed AND got caught, so I know for sure it was spying activity from him.

Just a strange game occurrence, this early and this well executed.

Happy the learn it's rare! I'm used to Sitting Bull popping in the running water but not something like this.

Are you sure there wasn't something else happening there? There's a random event that can take out several cottages on the same turn. An AI building 4 spies in the BCs and using them coordinately to take out 4 cottages simultaneously is not only rare, it doesn't happen.

The random event sounds right. 2-4 improvements get destroyed, so chance to hit 4 Cottages aren't too small, especially if there were only few to none other improvements. The log also gets a message about espionage. Screenshots always help a lot with such things.
