I'm looking for a library of city lists of all kinds of tribes and civilizations.
Currently I'm looking for city lists of these civilizations:

Assyrians
Hittites
Minoans
Spartans
Macedonians
Etruscans
Hebrew
Nubians
Maurya
Zhou
Sung
Yamato

I Already made lists of these myself, but I would like to compare them and expand them with what the people here on civfanatics have in store.

If anyone could point me into the right direction, I would be greatful :)

Ah, those are indeed nice lists. But unfortunately for me, they all are from modern countries. I'm looking for the period 2000 BC till 1000 AD.

Hmmm... nobody knows a good thread (or maybe a finished mod/scenario in which these civilizations are used)?

Some of them are in the Ancient Mediterranean mod - you'll find the city lists there. You could also try this thread as there are some ancient city lists there and I believe it does include all the city lists from the Ancient Mediterranean mod. Your profile states you have C3C - so you already have the Hittite city list you were requesting ;) .

The C3C Hittite city list is crap, to put it bluntly. Many 'cities' in at are actually regions, archaeological site-names (i.e Turkish) or are not Hittite cities at all. I've done a fair amount of research on the Hittites as part of my degree, so here's the list I put together:

Hattusa (Boghazkoy)
Nesa (Kanesh, Kultepe)
Purushanda (Acem Huyuk)
Ullama
Nenassa
Hubusni (Hupisna, Eregli)
Tuwanuwa (Tyana, Bor)
Lusna (Lystra)
Kussara
Samuha
Nerik
Landa
Hakpis (Amazya)
Hattena
Hanhana
Gaziura (Turhal)
Marassantiya (Sivas)
Adaniya (Adana)
Tarsus (Not strictly Hittite...)
Mersin (...but don't fit anywhere else really)
Tarhuntassa (Dattassa)
Kummani (Sar)
Lawazantiya (Elbistan)
Tegarama (Malatya)
Meliddu (Arslantepe)
Azatiwadaya (Karatepe)
Kummuhi (Samsat)
Marqasi (Maras)
Sam’al (Zincirli)
Sissu
Kullania

I haven't included a number of Neo-Hittite cities (such as Karchemish) because I also have the Amurrum (Syrians/Amorites) in my setup and these cities belonged to them first. If you're interested here's a city list for Amurru (ancient Syria):

Ebla
Ugarit
Yarmuti
Hamath
Mari
Habuba Kabira
Nagar (Nawar, Tell Brak)
Shehna (Apum)
Urkesh
Tuttul
Halab (Yamkhad, Aleppo)
Alalakh
Karchemish (Jerebus)
Emar
Qatna
Harran
Terqa (Hana)
Urshu
Hashshu
Tunip
Qadesh (Kinza)
Qarqar
Damascus
Zobah
Riblah
Arpad
Guzana
Amida
Nisibis (Nusaybin)
Til Barsip
Hindanu

Cities from Damascus on are Aramaean cities. The Armaeans were the iron age sucessors to the bronze age Amurrum (Amorites).

Other civs you're looking for:

Assyrians:

Ashur
Nineveh
Arbil (Arbela, Irbil)
Ekallatum
Gashur (Nuzi)
Karana (Qattara, Rimah)
Shusharra (Shemsharra)
Shubat-Enlil
Ashnakkum (Chaga Bazar)
Kilizu
Arraphka
Arhuzina
Shibaniba
Kar-Tukulti-Ninurta
Kalhu (Calah, Nimrud)
Talmusha
Tarbashu
Apku
Shadikanni
Qattuna
Dur Sharrukin (Khorsabad)
Dur Katlimmu
Kar Shalmaneser
Balawat
Kurbail
Lahiru
Imgur-Illil (Balawat)
Shapirrutu

Kush: (Nubians is a more modern term, probably derived from the Nobae who were much later. The Ku****es called themselves the Nehesy)

Kerma
Tabo (Argo Island)
Kawa (Gematon)
Kedurma
Soleb
Sedeinga
Kurru
Napata (Jebel Barkal)
Sanam
Nuri
Debba
Dangeil
Kurgus
Meroe
Naga
Basa
Hamadab
Defeya
Soba
Sennar
Yeha

All my lists are in chronological order (as best I can determine), though I do make a few allowances to ensure a decent capital.

I don't have lists of the others you've mentioned, but if anyone is interested I have accurate lists for the following:

- Sumer/Akkad
- Phoenicia (including Carthage)
- Arabia (including Southern Arabia (Saba etc) and other pre-Islamic cities)
- Egypt (chronological and with Egyptian rather than foreign names, i.e 'Waset' instead of 'Thebes'
- Mranma (Pyu and Pagan era Burma)
- Angkor (including Funan and Chen-la, all Sanskrit names, as used at the time)

If someone wants to copy all this and put it in the stickied city list thread, why not do so? Otherwise, it would likely befit the board for someone to put a link to this thread in aforementioned city list thread...

Xyth, thanks for your city lists. Your Hittite list was just what I needed, and I could finally solve my problem about whether I should put certain cities in the list of the Babylonians, Assyrians or Hittites.

You mentioned having lists for Egypt and Arabia, I would be interested in those two. And perhaps you also have a list for typically Persian and Babylonian cities?

Also, in your Assyrian list, both Balawat and Imgur-Illil are in the list while you point out that they are the same city :)

I really like it that you point out those double cities, sometimes I'm searching on maps finding for instance Kanesh on one map and Kultepe on another, but never on the same map. And I thought they were different cities then hehe. I could now delete many of those double cities in my list. :)

-------------

Btw if people know a source for a distinctive city list for the Zhou and Qin dynasties of ancient China... I can use them. China is also such a country for which I see different spellings on many places (often cities ending on -zhou spelled as -chow or qin spelled as Tsin or Tjin), making that one complex as well.

I could do with a city list for the Qin as well.
If it's any help, the link I provided in my earlier post in this thread has city lists for the default civs in the game with over 200 cities in each list :) .

I'll put Egypt and Arabia in my next post.

I'm working on a Persian city list at the moment, I hope to have it finished by the end of the weekend. I'll post it here when it's done.

As for a Babylonian city list, it would be essentially the same as the one for Sumer/Akkad but reordered a bit. All important Babylonian cities are already in that list (including Babylon), as Babylonia is really just a modern name for the civilization, the 'Babylonians' thought of themselves as the rulers of Sumer and Akkad.

Whoops. Thanks for spotting that.

The ancient near east in particular is riddled with cities known by several names. Often it is because they were around for so long and were ruled by different peoples, each of which gave them new names. Makes it hard sometimes to decide which nation's city list some go in.

I intend to tackle China at some point too, but it's a fair way down my todo list.

Here's Egypt:

Nekhen (Heirakonpolis)
Nebt (Naqada)
Behdet (Edfu)
Thinis
Abydos
Waset (Thebes)
Abu (Elephantine)
Djerty (Tod)
Iuny (Armant)
Coptos
Dendera
Ipu (Akhmim)
Perhathor (Gebelein)
Memphis
Perwadjyt (Buto)
Sakkara
On (Heliopolis)
Sauty (Asyut)
Qis (Cusae, Meir)
Ashnunein (Hermopolis)
Ihnasiya (Herakleopolis)
Rostja (Giza)
Abusir
Hutherib (Athribis)
Bubastis
Djedu (Busiris)
Perbanebdjed (Mendes)
Sais
Buhen
Heh (Semna)
Sawu
Itjtawy
Atfih
Avaris
Sile
Akhetaten (Amarna)
Per-Ramesse (Qantir)
Permedjed (Oxyrhynkos)
Tanis
Taremu (Leontopolis)

Once again these are chronological order and it starts from the predynastic period. I've tried to use the original Egyptian names wherever I can find out what they are. Does anyone know the Egyptian name for Memphis? Incidently, the Egyptians called their nation 'Kemet'.

Memphis was called "Meri-Ptah" originally. In the fifth dynasty, it was rebuilt and renamed "Men-Nefer" (White Walls). It was again later renamed to Memfi, which is where the Greeks dervied "Memphis" from.

On a side note, the correct pronunciation of the Egyptian "Thebes" is "Shewa", not "Waset" or "Washe". This is because the Egyptians wrote heiroglyphs in the way which looked best, not the way they were pronounced.

And here's Arabia:

Dilmun
Magan
Ubar
Marib
Sirwah
Nashshan
Nashq
Qarnaw
San’a’
Timna
Shabwa
Zafar
Aden
Muza (Mocha)
Qana
Najran (Raamah)
Samhar (Khor Rori)
Qaryat
Gerrha
Sohar
Musqat
Yathrib (Medina)
Mecca
Tayma
Hegra
Dedan
Duma
Petra
Tadmor (Palmyra)
Hatra
Damascus
Aleppo
Basra
Kufa
Karbala
Najaf
Fustat
Kairouan
Baghdad
Mosul
Samarra

Chronological again. The first 3 semi-legendary and may have been states, not cities. Everthing after that up to Qaryat is South Arabian (Saba, Hadramaut and all that). Then there's a selection of the more important Arabian cities, both pre-Islamic and Islamic.

Damascus was actually an Aramaean city, but I included it because it was such an important Arabian capital.

Thanks! This clears up a few mysteries for me.

@ R8fxt: Yup, thanks. It proved out to be useful :)

This is what I currently have for the Zhou and the Qin. I got them from my history atlas which shows a map of that tim. The order is just how I felt like it would look nice. Most often I placed larger cities and cities more close to the capital higher in the list.
