Installing under Windows 7

So yeah, I just bought Civilization III Complete from D2D and I can't make it work. I've installed it under Windows XP (sp3) compatibility mode like ainwood suggested and have tried to run the .exe shortcut under Windows XP compatibility mode as well.

I am using Windows 7 Starter and this is a netbook (Asus EEEpc touch screen thing...)

Civilization 2 is working fine and flawlessly!

But Civilization 3 does not respond at all.

Not sure what to try now...

Win7 doesn't get along with programs like Civ III that store settings and data under Program Files, so install Civ III in a different folder. I chose c:\Users\Public\Games\CivIII. Then both CivIII and Win7 are happy.

Details here in post 27 of this thread.

I had installed it under d:\Civilization III

But I am going to try the directory you suggested.

Installed it in the c:\Users\Public\Games\CivIII directory using setup.exe under Windows XP (sp3) compatibility mode and it still doesn't work.

Any suggestion?

I had problems similar to skulldigger. I solved mine after reading his post by connecting to the internet. I am running on a laptop and had wifi turned off. Just turning on the wifi fixed the problem.:)

Oh! Civ III requires at least 1024x768. Many notebooks have 1024x600 screens, and CivIII simply won't run with less than 1024 wide or less than 768 high as far as I know.

You can try adding KeepRes=1 to your .ini file, but I don't think I've ever known CivIII to work on less than 768 Y res. There is also an .ini setting for windowed mode, but I haven't tried this.

I started to look into desktop extender programs to get it working on my netbook, but I have other machines that can play it, so I didn't try that.

Or hook up to an external monitor.

Aw shoot! So there's nothing I can do to make it work on my netbook without an external monitor or GiMeSpace desktop extender, right?

I am so sad right now...

It installed fine on 7, but the menu button for new game doesn't do anything. "Run as Administrator" doesn't help, although it does work from the administrator account. Civ3Edit doesn't work either. What do I do?

I am also having issues installing Civ3 on wind 7. I had the game going fine on here but other issues forced me to format and reinstall windows. After the necessary updates and installing anti virus, I installed civ3 but cannot get rid of the exe file coming up as the play icon. I followed Ainwood's instruction to a T four times but to no avail. Any suggestions, please?

i did something which enabled Civ iii to work fine under Windows 7 but am not exactly sure why. Perhaps someone can experiment to find out.

i installed Civ iii and the 1.29f patch under Windows 7 Home Premium on a Sony Vaio laptop. The game actually installed and played OK EXCEPT for the text and hypertext in the Diplomacy and Civilopedia screens. On those screens, the text appeared as though there was an extra carriage return :) at the end of every line and so didn't fit properly. The longer Civilopedia texts were cut off and the diplomacy hypertexts were not all accessible as many were off the screen.

i suspected the problem was related to the fonts but followed the suggestions of experimenting with different compatibility modes first. This didn't solve the problem but i discovered that the Windows 2000, XP, and Vista modes all worked while the Win 95/98/ME modes did not.

Eventually i tried copying the LSANS font which came with Civ iii into the system fonts directory. This didn't work either, but later, after tinkering with Civ3.ini file and other font settings (most of which caused Windows 7 to display a "Civilization 3 has stopped working" message to appear), i deleted the LSANS font from the system directory. All of a sudden everything worked perfectly as it did on my old Win 98 machine.

i suspect the native Civ iii LSANS font has to be in the proper place to be used by the game or it crashes or just works wrong but maybe someone who likes to experiment can determine why this worked for me.

Hope this helps someone.

I downloaded civ 3 from direct3drive and the game says it fails to install because i need to run setop.exe , ive tried changen the settings to windows xp like people have said but it still fails to install . Any idea would be great , thankyou !

I installed civ 3 complete no problem. Then hit the icon and no go. I went into program files and ran it as an administrator and it works just fine. I accidentally deleted the icon for complete the other day though so now i can only play civ 3 but not conquests. I tried to re-install civ 3 complete through the program files but it said i needed to run setup.exe. so i just un-installed and now re-installing. Going to see what happens.

You should have been able to "create shortcut" within the program file. I use it all the time w/ Win7 and it works. You create shortuct then cut and paste it to the desktop. Just my guess of course.

Civ3 runs fine on my desk computer, but on my new laptop it just crashes on start..

I've tried running as admin and compatibility mode of win XP but nothing helps.

Both PCs have Win 7.

I made a screen capture video of me installing Civ III on Win 7: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OC7ALkeoZmE

That 8-minute video covers from start to standard fully patched install and quickstart game testing. I recorded changing .ini settings, adding a graphics mod, using the editor and installing and using MapStat and CivAssist II, but I need to edit and upload them still.

REMINDER: Minimum 1024x768 width and height. Newer monitors especially on netbooks that are 720 high or 600 high will not allow Civ3 to run.

I recently upgraded to Windows 7, and a newer computer. I installed Civ3 Complete, and when I start a new game it only gave me the option to play up to seven rivals. I was playing Civ3 Complete on an older machine running Win XP, and it would allow me to play up to 15 rivals. Has anyone had this problem? If yes, were you able to fix this problem?

I'm going to get a laptop with Windows 7 Premium. From what I've been hearing, it's going to be impossible to play without upgrading to Professional and getting compatability mode...but I *have* played Civ with Windows 7 Starter, right out of Steam, though it's been a while since that's worked. So what should I expect...?
