Hi,

after starting a new game I am not sure if I continue this one. It became a too good start.

Its a medium dry archipel world (70% land) on Warlord. Mammoth Riders (3/3/2 at 80 shields) became available with ivory and Horseback Riding.

Madrid (M) was founded in the middle of lots of ivory.
By fighting Barbarians my scouting Mammoth discovered nearly all ancient secrets and became elite before locating the Americans. The capture of Washington (W) created a Leader, which created an (empty) Army in Washington. The other two cities were destroyed by my single Mammoth "Big Al".

Next I located the Maya (CI) and Incas (Cu) in the center north corner of my continent. Both declared war on me after I denied their demands.

My Army stuffed with two Mammoths and Big Al quickly overpowered them before the mass produced mammoth reinforcements could even arrive. The Army received it third Unit after the fighting.

To top this, there were settlers and workers in nearly every enemy city and five luxuries types (Tropical Birds are still unconnected).

I think I have to rebalance the game.

How can a big mammoth that is easily startled by a pig be so strong? I'm guessing even a spear could easily give them a hard time, and I'm not even talking about a spear to the eye, they could even be deployed on the ground as spikes and the mammoths would have to go around.

They're just too big and slow to be effective, sure, you might make them 3 attack / 3 defence if you really want to make them OP, but you better make them very expensive shield wise. But saying that, on top of that, they have 2 movement speed, when an archer only has 1, that's insane. If anything, their speed should be 0.5.

Hi,

most of your arguments also fits to horses, camels and elephants. ;)

The burning pigs were used against elephants and I think that any other riding animal would also panicked in that situation (the medival humans were extraordinary brutal and cruel to both other humans and animals).

Offence: I disagree, War Elephants were devastating attackers (especialy against unprepared enemies).

Defence: I agree and will set defence to 1 point. The wikipedia article over War Elephants discrepes some of the cruel ways to defeat and panic elephants.

Speed: I disagree. Have you ever seen a running elephant? It is an impressive sight (I have only seen a very short galopp of an elephant at Hagenbecks Tierpark).

I think I will set the mammoth to 4/1/2 and chivalry, so that they do not dominate the early game.

Wouldn't that make them fairly unattractive compared to Knights, besides the fact that they look cooler? Or do you not have Knights?

It is a somewhat tough predicament. They have to be worthwhile to build at some point, but if you make them permissable at Mammothback Riding, it's hard to get them balanced properly. And if you tried 3/1/2, it'd just be like a Mounted Warrior that looker scarier.

Nah, a mammoth would even be slower than this. Provided they'd even let themselves be rode to battle, which I highly doubt it, I don't see people easily taming mammoths or being able to drive them well. Certainly not 2 speed, they would never be nowhere as fast as light armoured men (like the unit archer) in crossing mountains or rivers, much less when compared to knights and other horses riding full speed.

Oh, and men sitting up them would be easily vulnerable, I wonder how you give them so much defensive points, they would be best used for shock purposes and pretty much a burden in other circumstances. 3/1/1 would be the stats I'd give to such an unit.

Hi,

todays elephants can reach a speed of 40 km/h (25 mph). This is very close to a horse and much faster than a man (expecially an armed and armored one). As the Mammoth was significent larger than todays elephants, I assume that they could at least reach the same speed.

So I think that a elephant (or mammuth) could have a speed of 2 in the game.

I have taken Quintillus and your comments as advise and changed them to 3/1/2 as expensive and heavy alternative to Horsemen.

As there are no more Mammoth around one can only guess, if they could be tamed and used as riding animal. ;)

Those events are kind of funny. Annoying, but funny.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that was intentional.

Hi,

one could say, that the Koreans got an extraordinary bad start in this game.

On the other side, they got the one and only ivory on the map and it was a pleasure for me to sell them Mathematiks for their complete treasure (1 gold piece). :D

I don´t have ivory and the statue of Zeus has been allready became opsolete for me, since I change that event to Chivalry. :)

How does that city even have enough food to grow to size 4?

How does that city even have enough food to grow to size 4?

I do not know. It has neither a harbour or any other city improvement. It seems to reach its final size with 4 (if it were one of mine, I doubt it would grow beyound 2 without harbour).

And the only thing he is doing is building lots of troops (archer, warrior and spearmen). Last time I looked, there were 12 units in Seoul. No surprise, that he has absolutly no money. ;)

Oh, and was wrong. In Rome, Spain and the Ottoman Empire is a lot of ivory. And I can trade with them... ;)

It seems like it would be much easier to just send a few Dromons and Knights over to Seoul to conduct "Aggressive Negotiations" for the "Liberation" of Korea's Ivory Source. :mischief:
