Internet game question

Sorry if this is a newb question, but I'm trying to join an internet game from the main menu and I'm not getting any response. I signed up for an account on gamespy, but everytime I type in my name and password and hit login from the civ 4 main menu the screen hiccups for a second and then nothing else happens. Has anyone else had this problem? Am I doing something wrong?

Do you have any firewalls or other virus protection on? If so, turn these off and try again and see if that works.
