The women nominated, the men voted.
But wasn't the status of chieftan hereditary?
The status of chieftain was not hereditary. However, a good chieftain raised the status of his family, and the candidates were primarily chosen from families with a high status. Much like present-day USA, I'd say. :)
It was by no means a certainty though, representatives were also chosen on personal merits. And if a representative functioned badly he would be replaced.

On a side note, Indians also invented plastic surgery aone and a half centuries before anybody else even dared to think about it;)

So Madonna can send her best wishes to us, through oh say, a live concert;)

Some inventions from argentina:

The Bus:
Ball Point (Pen)
sweet milk;
Roast meet;
Churrasco (like a hamburger but with "roast meet")
The ByPass( quirurgic technique in medicine)

And all others military sciences in 1948 under development of Juan Peron, but as always happens, the Usa government cancels all this projects and then the Usa scientist take them as their "invention". Anyways this happened in th history of the humannity

All I have to add to this thread is that I am very happen the Americans are willing to share with me their best Invention ever:

The Pizza!

The UK has too many to list - Here is a good A-Z guide!

http://inventors.about.com/library/inventors/bl_british_inventors.htm

Some British innovations:

Fax Machine - Alexander Bain
Penicillin - Alexander Fleming
Television - John Logie Baird
Internal Combustion Engine - Samuel Brown
Jet Engines - Sir Frank Whittle

We account for 65% of inventions since 1945!

You are incorect.

I invented the Internal Combustion engine in 1820. I also invented the Jet Engine in 1935 and my friend Bob invented the Fax Machine one day in 1958.

That said do you really think its possible that the UK accounts for 65% of inventions since 1945?

Actually I do, the British have invented an awful lot, the difference is that we don't have the money or industry to actually make proper use of the inventions we do make. This means they are often "sold" as such to the highest bidder or passed to other friendly countries such as the US. Also, when I last heard that figure mentioned it was 65% of modern inventions were either "British" or relied entirely on an invention that was British to make it possible, which again is another matter.

Frank Lloyd Wright, famous architect from Appleton Wisconsin, you should see some of the homes he designed. They are amazing, way ahead of his time.
