IOT Developmental Thread

I'd rather keep it on the KISS mantra in terms of troops.

Not all of us are military strategists.

I like the subforum idea. I would be willing to moderate (if you all find me suitable), because I did catch a lot of trolling and just plain disrespectful behavior. Also, this.

And Mathalamus, if you pop up with another incarnation of Byzantium or anything even conveniently located in Istanbul, I'm sure people will want to throttle you!

and i should throttle other people for starting out as a same nation as IOT 4?

sorry. new game, fresh start. ill go as Byzantium as usual.

I nominate Joe. He seems to really care about IOT, and catches alot of crap.

EDIT: I declare war on Byzantium, then. I'm honestly tired of you always PPing, but to PP the same nation? I honestly think your a Neo Byzantium in RL, and it takes a lot for me to make assumptions like that.

Wow, Tanicus is defending me. Thanks. :)

You can defend your rivals/enemies' honor even while planning to eat them and their children. :p

As the fact that Tanicus has only dice and Red Alert screw-all-continuity-and-logic-because-we-now-have-armoured-bears, we need yet again /another/ combat system.

Rather than commenting on how Red Alert is generally supposed to be a bit insane(the man-cannon was epic), I'll skip to the meat and potatoes.

So far, we have 1) RA3, 2) Dice, 3) Coins. The attacker gets to choose which they want to use.

I care a lot about IOT too... ask Thor about my nagging. I want custody of my child back!

...well technically, it's some bizarre lovechild between me, tailless, and whoever started Off Topic Empires. Oh that poor kid...

It'll be kinda like a NES, only instead of stats, we write stories. The attacker will tell Tanicus the type of terrain he wants to attack and how, and he'll then give the defence a chance to describe the defences (To make it fair, Tanicus will tell only the terrain, not the opposing forces). Then once we get both, Tanicus will tell the exact battlefield looks like, we tell him our plans, and then, by military logic and better writing skills, will decide whom wins, of course describing how the battle goes out.

Now, the only disadvantage I see with this that Tanicus can really fudge the results any way he wants, /especially/ if he's playing.

Precisely. That and as CivG said, we're not all armchair generals. :p I don't mind adding a bit of realism/tactics(hence my penalties/limit on attacks per turn), but too much realism hurts gameplay.

prone to cheating. the person will buff up the defenses to unbelievable levels.

Oh dear. Math complaining about unbelievable stats. :p

What about a Risk style? Or would that be too much like Hearts of Iron or Victoria.

That works fine for me. But with several penalties to prevent fudging.

Well, if Tanicus finds that you're bringing an unholy amount of troops, he'll tell you to get rid of some.

Obviously this. While troop numbers don't work, one of my formal rules is that players please try to be realistic. This is why I like providing budgets/population numbers/running data. That way, we can make the game more of a reality without complicating it by actually applying these numbers.

alright. is 500,000 soldiers in the Entire Istanbul province fair?

...Dear god. You're going to be bankrupted by so many troops for such a small area.

Do what real nations do when you're weak: FORM ALLIANCES. Quality > quantity. Would you rather 1 million African troops, or 200,000 troops from 5 European nations?

I'd rather keep it on the KISS mantra in terms of troops.

Sounds good to me. :) Stats are mostly used for fun.

NEW GAME. FRESH START. Byzantium is older than the pickles in my cellar. IOT3 I was Arabia, IOT4 I was Ukraine, IOT 2/5 I can guarantee I will be neither. Honestly, what's the drag?

On terms of abrasive?
The recent political posturing is understandable. What concerned me were posts made before the Spam Deluge that were inexcusably rude, particularly toward Math, pariah that he is. You may have even been infracted for them.

So why don't we simulate the sword with the pen?
Strangely enough, this was my original idea. It was basically to take the form of a write-off: whomever came up with the most convincing story, even if their side lost, would "win". I never suggested it since again, it's horribly subjective, not to mention the question of how many of us can write.

That's sort of what I tried with A&A-style dice combat. It would have worked much more believably if army development was part of the game itself.

...And since he couldn't be here today:

First of all, for any posts that I have made that are truly spam, and not just the game moving too fast for you, I apologize. Some players REALLY don't make it easy, like Cull, who both want to limit posting and don't want to get PMs. Some players won't take PMs.

Second of all, please don't kick me out of the game. As I attempt to follow rules even when I do not like them, I will do the same with 5 posts per update. I will try to solve discussions through PM. I'd appreciate more clarity of what you don't want in the thread.

PS: I actually have a possible solution to this. Possibly creating a discussion thread, where all posts related to IOT, even lengthy diplomacy, could be located, and then a main IOT thread where only the results are posted.

Third of all, I am strongly against Droopytofu's suggestion. If it were just for spam, I would understand, but I am an unpopular user and would likely be out in one week, even if I didn't spam at all. I also asked Tanicius about it and he agrees with my reasoning.

right complaint, wrong nation.

i'm not planning to be a city state. im planning to go as Byzantium covering at least turkey.

500,000 troops is doable.

i just like that nation :) and i like to be consistent in nations.

Well, 500 K in a SINGLE area still reeks of a police state... I don't think even Washington, Moscow, or Beijing is that well-protected.

well some people have an annoying tendency to attack their capital first. its just here to prevent it from being winnable.

of course if you conquered everything else, the Constantinople Guard would probably be reduced to 50,000.

Agreed. IOT I was OSA, IOT III was Venice, IOT IV was NEA, and I plan to be Korea in IOT IV

Oh, that. Well, I'm sorry, it's just that Math's PPing and "I'm much better than thou art" just really, REALLY urks me to no end. Sad thing is, I probably would had left him alone if he didn't decide to quit being Byzantium for no good reason and switching to Venezuela, and then after I DoWed him, Ethiopia, then Egypt, then Guinea where he decided he'll take a stand.

Please don't kill this off completely. If we can make up rules for it, it would be by far the best way to determine a battle.

When I used that excuse, my father always used to say to me, "a foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of a mediocre mind."

That said, I'd want to be in the next game as the Anglo-Norman/Angevin power in Britain & Normandy.

sorry about that. i promise i wont do it.

If we're doing colours as well, I have to have Imperial pink. One fifth of the world was pink, don't you know?

Now I know how Sid Meier as well as other TBS and RTS game developers went through to develop combat in there games. Though to be fair, were not going to be running around with axemen, pikemen, spearmen, and other panhistorical units (Though it would be nice as an easter egg to have one spearmen defeat a tank just for the laughs, but only as an easter egg and would have no bearing to the combat mechanics)

NEW GAME. FRESH START. Byzantium is older than the pickles in my cellar.
I'd take it me as the New England Republic is out of the question :p (Unless I come up with a better name like the Connecticut Valley Republic).

I'd like to know where you keep your ancient pickles :p.

Oh geeze, don't everyone look at me! I may write and create my comics in DYOS. But I don't wanna be the poor kid in college and/or high school who has to write EVERYONE'S essay (general address to everyone :p).

(Ok that came off strange to me since I'm always a shameless pug when it comes to my work :p)

Not sure how the NESers did it. Though it would make IOT look more like NES than a model UN.

I'll cede the colour to you then, Link. I'll settle for a nice light blue.
