IOT Developmental Thread

Four issues needed to be solved before Counter Colonialism goes up

Issue 1: Not exactly realistic nations

Tanny and I worked out an agreement where he could be his Enchiladas that he loves. He liked it, I liked it, and we had the common courtesy to work it out before the game started. However, then I realized something. IOT's motto has always been "historical accuracy be damned", but I always prided myself of trying to make sense of things. I also probably had the biggest issues of Batmanistan of all the users in RIOT (and probably the only one who left due to the final verdict). Simply put it, extraterrestrials do not fit in the mood of Counter Colonialism.

Now, I don't want to be a douche and tell Tanny I changed my mind. But I don't want to ruin the mood of this game. Therefore, I'm going to put this as a vote for the public to decide. There are only two options.

1: Let Tanny be his enchiladas, and let anyone WHO CONTACTS ME IN ADVANCE* do something similar
2: It ruins the mood of game, do not allow

*Notice the emphasis. :mischief:

Issue 2: Map

TK made this map. It is very awesome, and he worked hard on it. However, he promised me this by Easter. I got it May 22nd, and even then, I had to pressure him. We all have a life, I understand. I went on a 3-Day trip to D.C. on that very week, preventing the release date of week of getting map.

However, the point of this isn't to berate on how late TK was. :p Every work, even the great, can always be improved. And I see some areas that need to be improved. The biggest issues is cradles. When TK said he was going to make the historical native city builders (Aztecs, Mayans, Incans) have more providences, I thought that they would have a little more than the other areas. However, well, just look at the map. It does not contrast with the rest of the map, and is by far the least favorite feature of the map. Also, some areas just don't look right. The goal was a map based off of geography. While this worked for the most part, there are some areas that did not. As a New Yorker, I am especially displeased on how New York turned out. Since the Iroquois are going to be much larger than what they achieved OTL, there is no point modeling each of the original five tribes and their territory. Combined with the fact this a political, not a geographical, way to split the land, it does not contrast the geographical mood. Also, the Caribbean jut looks like two parallel lines drawn across Cuba, and then called a day.

So, here are three choices for the vote. Note, I will be doing any changes myself, unless anyone volunteered to do so. Don't be afraid to do so. ;)

1: Get rid of the cradles, but leave the rest of the map as is
2: Make your changes to the map
3: This took long enough. Just do it

Issue 3: Events

Yes, events. However, unlike most IOTs, they aren't made of chance (Turn 0: "A terrorist blows up a power plant" FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU). Instead, they are based off of stories and anything interesting found in the game. By having events tied to roleplaying, I hope I encourage more of it happening. But also gone is instant reward or penalty.

Instead, each event will have a choice. However, there is no set choices. For example, say a Seminole colony found a Carib spy. The Carib King has justification that the spy is not so, but the Seminole King tells the colony not to back down. The Seminole colony has a choice. Does he release the spy to the Caribs? Continue to keep him under custody? Try to reach a compromise? Execute the man? Bribe a 3rd Party to take him? Its all up to the player. The next turn, I'll give the results of the path chosen.

But do you even want events?

1: Yes, I would
2: No, I wouldn't

Issue 4: Time

Aftermath and Son of Mars II are two big ticket IOTs. Both are popular, and both are heavy with members. Could Counter Colonialism compete with these two? Three choices

1: Yes, this can compete with Aftermath and Sons of Mars II. Release ASAP
2: No, it couldn't. Wait until one finishes/dies, then make.
3: This can live, but its best to wait to at least June 24th, where Omega has his last day of school for the school year.

Given my own responsibilities I likely won't be able to commit to this game and so will abstain from the first three, but I strongly recommend deferring the launch until your school's over. The more free time you have, the more effectively you can GM, and the more reliably the game will run.

I'm planning on developing an IOT - it'll be called Shattered Nations and will focus on expansion and diplomacy (as in, help me in my war diplomacy ;)). It won't be ready for a few months yet, but expect a map with lots of territories :D

The map so far :D

Thoughts? (Yes, it's got lots of small territories. There's a reason for that.) And what's better for a name - Shattered Nations or Shattered Kingdoms?

Issue 1

Flap-Jak the Enchilada is surprised such a topic is up for debate!

(Obviously vote the first option)

Never mind that Enerjak wouldn't be omnipotent; no emeralds, so very minimal, if ANY, supernatural capabilities. For an example, see Enerjak in Sons of Mars II - he has only one emerald he took from his home dimension, and he can't do much with it apart from maintain his youth.

So, no need to worry about Enerjak-in-the-box doing this:

Issue 2

Option 2. Just do whatever you want. :p I do intend to settle in Mesoamerica... that's where the echidnas were from in the game timeline, after all. And since this normal Earth rather than Mobius (read - human dominated so it's in line with the games), it makes sense to settle there.

Issue 3

Option 1. Keeps things interesting since players these days seem less RP-prone than they did at first.

Issue 4

Best to wait until you're free from school to keep stress from piling on, and one of the IOTs to finish up. No idea when Sons of Mars II will finish up, even if Dommy is about to open a powder keg. :p

Wait until June 24th because finals can screw you over quickly time-wise

1. Not in the spirit, really. I'd say no.
2. MOAR TERRITORIES!
3. Yes
4. Wait till school's out.

Speaking of Batmanistan

The revolution hit Hawaii notoriously hard. A local academic turned dictator used the "Batman Mythos" when he took control of the islands. Batmanistan became infamous for the cult of personality in which the dictator (who went by Bruce Wayne) violently suppressed any other history that may contradict the "new" history.

In one paragraph, I made Batmanistan make sense within the context of the history.

As for events, I quickly scrapped them in RAIOT because I strongly dislike events where your choices are arbitrary limited. In the end, I had tried to go with "open-ended responses" but decided that in future IOTs, I'll simply work in natural disasters and the such (which makes sense in the context of RIOT II anyway). Whether or not any event will give a reward as opposed to them just mitigating disaster is up to them.

Issue 1:

Sorry T-Fox, but I'm voting against you, especially in the light of how Omega dislikes crazy nations, that just wouldn't be right. Besides, its quickly becomming trollish:p

Issue 2

Either way, Florida will defeat New York:p (Abstain)

Issue 3

I like the new style of events. Do it.

Issue 4

It can compete, but I'd wait until you get out of school.

THAT SAID, I'm going to be totally without computer access from July 2- July 9, so I'd have to be able to automate my nation in some way during that one week if I wanted to play (Which I do, if it can be arranged.)

Double A, can you please clarify what you voted for on Option 2?

EDIT:

Option 2. Just do whatever you want. I do intend to settle in Mesoamerica... that's where the echidnas were from in the game timeline, after all. And since this normal Earth rather than Mobius (read - human dominated so it's in line with the games), it makes sense to settle there.

No Tanny. Setting up a colony there is suicide. Remember, the Americas are the most developed land in Earth of this time period. That is also where all the motherland NPCs that the colonies have to deal with. When I offered a colony, I expect you to place it in Europe like the other colonies.

Since your motherland won't be on the map (But is oh so very real), I'm probably going to make your events have bigger bonuses, but also have bigger penalties.

Oh, well in that case... will Australia be available? That's where the Floating Island was originally located? ;)

Failing that, somewhere off the coast of Britain? (Where Albion, the other den of echidnas, is located)

Oceania (Or Asia) is not even on the maps. So Britian it is.

The British are red anyway so it's a fitting location for the Enerjak Empire.

Or would be, if not for the fact people seem hellbent on keeping the echidnas away. :p

We'll just conquer you all when humanity shows its pathetic nature and softens Earth up.

Double A, can you please clarify what you voted for on Option 2?

I want more a map with more territories. Especially on the US (east) coast.

Since your motherland won't be on the map (But is oh so very real), I'm probably going to make your events have bigger bonuses, but also have bigger penalties.

I am now VERY OPPOSE to option 1.

I am going to run with the idea "Enerjak" isn't superpowered in any form, even if he is long-lived, and most of his "power" is really just illusions and tricks. After all, any sufficiently advanced technology appears magical to those who not understand it.

Basic idea:

-The echidna race, extremely advanced, control much of their home world, but depleting resources force them to look for new locations. Lo and behold, they find Earth, and this is where settlement occurs.

-A catch is that, despite the fact they're technically advanced, communication isn't reliable. Translation: any of the nifty futuristic stuff the echidna colony would have runs out quick, and they're forced onto the same level as human civilisation.

-This gives credence to Omega's idea; when events/links with the home world are good, the echidnas are prosperous. When the link is weak or severed entirely, it's disastrous due to how dependent they are on Mobian technology.

After all, do you know how much of a step back it is to go from Chaos Fusion technology to oars and sails?! From laser rifles to muskets?

-As for why the echidnas don't have reliable FTL technology... chances are it's because echidnas seem to have a tendency to be both scientifically brilliant yet be derpy. After all, every few decades some whacknut declares himself "Enerjak" after getting hyped up on power and destroys half the planet!

-Perhaps the FTL technology is experimental? While Chaos energy (assume it's a natural resource on Mobius, as it seems to be on Anti-Mobius) would allow travel across great distances, it's logically unstable in this experimental phase. Case in point: Even if ships were equipped to Chaos Control, they'd likely zig zag all over the place - if not into a bloody black hole! - before reaching their destination.

-So, rather Colombus-esque, Earth was discovered on accident; what was supposed to be simple testing of colonial capabilities actually yielded a colony for once.

Some basic ideas, not too fleshed out.

As for the echidnas themselves, I like making them seem more alien. So I'm gonna go with my reverse Gerudo model, where they appear to be almost entirely male but have adaptions to reproduce.

"Enerjak" is likely passed on as a title, like a monarchy. Somewhat like how all Egyptian Pharoahs styled themselves Sons of Horus. Enerjak is a title in the comics anyway, applied to numerous beings.

-In line with it being a title, Enerjak would primarily be mortal. Any, any, ANY supernatural capability would be limited, most likely to slowed/stopped aging, but apart from that, he could be killed, he could be beaten, he could be humbled better than Poland when Germans attack.

So does that mean once every hundred years, a single female is born and takes the helm of the entire race, leading it to glory and/or rebellion against Hyrule?

I was contemplating creating an IOT Strategy discussion thread. Not entirely sure if that's cool though. Thoughts?
