I just got the opportunity to build the Iron Works in a city that wasnt a size 2 in the middle of a mountain range!

Just wondered if anybody else has stories of this 'cos it's the first time its ever happened to me since playing the game on its day of release....

/me walks away gobsmacked

Actually had it happen in my last game with the Chinese in PTW. (read about it here ) My city of Hangchow was on the first ring out from my capital, and when I got the IW built, and Hoover, and a Factory, it was cranking out units and wonders extremely fast. I think Hangchow was size 22 when I finished, and was producing faster than my capital!

I guess I've had good luck with it. I've gotten iron works in a first ring (palace or FP) city three times that I remember and once in 2nd ring out of about six or seven times I've been able to build it.

The first-ring FP city was the best - over 200 shields with IW+factory+Hoover.

My most recent instance, is, of course, all of 2 shields *with* a courthouse. :)

you wanna doctor the corruption rules then ;)

*optimum city percent 1000* rules \o/ (do for regent also as AI plays to that)

My current one is *decent* but it won't be a high producer all grass but two hills, two bonus grasslands. One that I reclaimed from the jungles. Production is already up to 60 at pop 12, with IW, factory and Hoover....

I'll post what production I get out of it once I've built Hoovers and Factory - won't be fantastic though as it's mostly desert and floodplain.

usually I would go look for those locations that could build iron works, conque it, destory any cities nearby, and build one of mine there. I could find such locations in most of the games.

I once had a medium map 8 civs with 6 IW locations.

I once had a huge map with 24 civs that had around 5.

Most games I never get it though.

In my first game, I managed to build it in my most productive city (which was Paris; real world map, playing as Germany, captured Paris during the war of 1465) which was cranking out 72 shields at the time I started to build it I think (1960s - 2000) but it still wasn't enough to build the Spacecraft before 2050.

Consider yourself lucky. I've been playing for over a year now, and I've never even had the Iron Works come up in a game.

Willem, did you play huge or large maps? for me, most of the games I could find one location with iron and coal together.

I play really huge maps, 256 x 256. And not once have I had the chance to build the damn thing! Maybe that's the problem, the resources are more spread out, making it harder to have both in the same city.

Play with many civs in a small map :) then you should see some IW cities.

On the maps I make, I try to make sure there are a few locations where the Iron Works can be built, it is a wonderful wonder.

Almost every starting location in the Great Lakes map has a chance of building it.

I manage to get the Iron Works occassionally. Seems I've been a lot luckier than some people here.

Can't remember if it was a self mod, but with Marla's Map I always have coal and iron on the two hills south west of London's founding place whenever I play the English. It's not the best production city- at least 'til offshore platforms- but it's still nice. :)

I'm a new player, I've only played 5 games, but the last 3 I've been able to build iron works. Last game it was my Forbidden Palace city, the game before that it was my capitol. Every game I've played so far has been with the default settings (standard map 7 AI civs). I've been starting in areas with lots of jungle, though.

I play the same map as Willem - 256x256, might explain why we never get it so often
