Okay.. I was wondering about a bad situation here. If you build an Iron Works in one of your cities... and then the coal or iron was depleted... would the Iron Works keep working  ?? Or would it just stop. Thanks for helping.

Oh ya... and by the way, is it more advantageous to beuild iron works when your city has 40 production than when your city has 12 production? It says in the Civilopedia that when built, it increases it's production by 100%. If anyone knows... please post!!!!!

It just keeps going...............

And I say go for the 40, but chances are you will only have one city that CAN build it so I don't think that there is any reason to think about the "more advantageous" city site :p

Thanks!! I was wondering if after you build the Iron Works, if it would keep increasing production after it was built. (i.e. production 40 + 1 shield = 42 production) or if it was one time (i.e. before iron works 20, after 40). I might test that... but if anyone knows... feel free to tell me!!!:D

I have had coal disappear while I was building the Iron works but i was able to complete it.

I think all improvements that affect a city's production are calculated as a modification on the city's current base production, not the production at the time the improvement was built. Also, multiple improvements percentages are added up and then all applied to the base production.

So for example, say you have a city with a production of 20. You build a factory, which increases production by 50%, so your city now has a production of 20 * 1.5 = 30 shields. Then you build Iron Works, which adds another 100% for a total of 150% increase and thus a production of 20 * 2.5 = 50 shields. If your city then grew to add another citizen that works a square for 2 shields, your base production would go to 22 and your overall production would be 22 * 2.5 = 55 shields.

These same calculations also apply for improvements that improve commerce, science, etc.

Which applies for everything in Civ3, when you are building Infantry and you loose your last resource of rubber you can still finish the Infantry for example.

Still wonder where dose Infantrists need the rubber for...

Oh!!!! Thanks SO much!!!!!!!!!! That helps alot!!!! :goodjob: :D

Your Ironworks issue is solved now, right? To be honest, I do not have a clue, never been in a situation where me was even just given the opportunity.

Resources are needed only to begin construction of something. Once it's been started, or has been completed, it doesn't matter whether you have the resource or not.

And I wouldn't worry to much about "advantageous" use of the Iron Works. The odds of having both Iron and Coal in the same city radius are pretty slim, so you'll just end up building it where ever the opportunity presents itself. I've been playing pretty consistently since before Christmas, and I have yet to build the thing.

There's also a mixed blessing with it. There's a lot of pollution, the highest of any building in the game. If you do manage to build it, make sure you always have a Worker near by, since you'll be constantly cleaning up the mess.

Seriously, other than the pollution (which comes anyway until you have ecology and recycling), Iron Work is worth every shield you invest in it and more. I have city with Iron Work that goes to 290+ production with Manufacturing Plant.

So whenever I get a chance to build an Iron Work I will go for it! :king:

Yes the opportunity doesn't arise very often, that's for sure. I've haven't had it come up yet, and I've been playing the game for awhile now.

Yeah, Iron Works is definitely worth it; and yes, you could play for months without the opportunity to build it.

Then comes the game when you could build it twice. I built the Iron Works in one game and then later on, a coal resource popped up near a city that already had iron. But I couldn't build another one. I assume it's because it's considered a small wonder and you could only build one of any of those anyway. I also assume that it is very rare. I would post the savegame, but I think I was getting trashed so I might save myself the embarrassment.

That's just FYI.

i could build it in my current game, but since the city
can only grow up to a size2, i'm not gonna bother:(

in fact i can build it on another continent aswell, if i could settle
on mountains:mad:

Yeah, last game I played, I was able to build the Iron Works in 2 different cities, both of which would have been worth it, when I discovered coal. Plus, I also had 2 other cities that if I'd had the city moved one space, I would have had 4 sites it could have been built. Before this, I'd never had the chance, and in this one game I had a choice between 2 cities, and 2 others that were very close to having been able to do it :)

I've been playing since November and never had a chance to build Iron Works.

Taught my girlfriend how to play about a month ago. Her second game she asks me if she should build "this Iron Works thing" or not.

The frustration when your tank attacks and loses to a knight doesn't even come close to this...
