Is "chick" a derogatory term for girls?

How do feminists in non-English speaking countries stay sane? El lapiz, la pluma? My goodness, everything has a gender!

Are you guys aware that there are feminists out there who regard "woman" to be a derogatory term for, well, women?
With that group wimin is the correct spelling. And since political correctness, or lack of it, is the subtext of this thread, I will add to it with this photo:

(My appologies to Chieftess and all the other wonderful and patient "chicks" who hang out here.)

Good Lord, I thought "womyn" was the extent of the damage.

it's nothing but a pronound. I can't think of any scenario where it would be offensive to use the word chick in a sentance and have that same sentance not be offensive using woman (how do you put wimininto singular?)

Apparently, you Canadians are out of touch. ;)

The only time chick is useful is when you are trying to be demeaning to a 30-something female employee, because they want SO BAD to be taken seriously that they go NUTS when you call them "chick" or "babe".

EXAMPLE:

At the supermarket, this lady employee (about 35y.o. I'd reckon) was being a jerk (wouldn't let me use an expired coupon). To drive her nuts, you just say something like "listen babe, do you think I might be able to talk to someone with a management position or at least a highschool diploma". You have to smile in a really cocky and demeaning way when you say it to, like you are talking to a 3 year old. that drives them NUTS.

You are trying to bend the rules and insult her, and you call her a jerk? :dubious: You're the one asking for the rules to be changed.

I wonder how tshese people minige. I mein, I guess tshey could have herstory classes about tshe Romin empire, and math classes about decifemals, and they could work out in phys. edwina. class, and so on, but at some point surely even tshey have to draw tshe line somewshere, before tshe language sounds stupid! Maybe a stern reprimind would shelp tshem?

I wasn't trying to insult her until she started being a jerk. The main thing wasn't the fact that she wouldn't lemme use the coupon, but the snobiness with which she informed me it was expired.

 Thankfully, they are in the minority.

I don't think it is derogatory, or at least i never use it as such. Come to think of it i never say it at all because i wasn't alive back in the 1960's when it was used.

 "Yes, look babe, I would like to speak to your MAN-ager."

I don't usually use the term, except occasionally, in a joking manner. "Hey, let's go pick up some chicks, 'k dude?" Not in a serious manner, and I doubt I would call a girl that to her face, especially if she was a good friend, just because it would be a little weird. I wouldn't consider it derogatory though. Perhaps a little familiar, but anyone who is offended by it needs some sort of psychological help.

5 stars, Hitro.

I prefer "female specimen #(insert code number) of district (insert district name)" instead of “chick.”

So it would go something like this, "female specimen #00029476 of district number 37 has above average physical features. Let us commence with the mating ritual."

Tried it out yourself, have you?

If so, what reaction did you get?

It does sound like something from the startrek dating website someone found :hmm:
I dont suppose you ve registered there have you? :p

You don't want to know, believe me. The things feminists forced us to do with our language... it's horrible!

I've lost all my respect for you.
If I was this employee or the manager and I heard someone talk like that to me or my staff; I would have removed that person from the store. If you cannot respect a basic form of politeness you are not welcome. Even if you'd have a point, but you hadn't since you had an expired coupon.

I don't know the charge laid on the word "chick" so I can't comment on the original post. Why not use the word Lady, woman, girl for females?

It doesn't matter whether you think is derogatory or not. It matters whether the person you are speaking to thinks it is. ;)
