Is Civ5 dead?

It seems that some of the DLCs have also included scenerios that were based on some of the more popular ones from Civ III:

Namely the Ancient Wonder scenerio & the one included with Spain & Incas.

So going this route, they are bound to make something like Rise of Rome & Fall of Rome in some future DLC.

Also if they want to do something "big", in addition to SDK, they could add a second leader to some of the civs, sharing the same UU & UB but having a different UA. For really big they could even add an advanced option where any leader can go to any civ.

'Dead' is only when nobody shows interest anymore. There are plenty of games that have long been left by the company that made them, but where fans are still making new content for it.

With Civ 5 it looks like the initial release was still full of flaws, so it seems like the developers have some repair work to do before releasing new content. It's just going a bit slow, that's all.

Civ V requirements were too high so I stayed with Civ4. I'm updating my pc now so now I'm waiting for the next expansion not DLC's. I'm really waiting for a massive multiplayer game of Civ that is not facebook version.

Once the SDK comes out, or at least they flesh out the available Lua calls, things will start rolling. There is some general patching/cleanup still (like the liberate -> denounce thread), and the tactical AI could use more attention (esp great generals.. man does the AI have a hard time with them!), but overall it's mostly there. The existing modding capabilities are functional enough for total conversions, which is the good stuff

Considering that Civ5 still has not left the top 10 games being played on Steam list since its release, I'd say it is far from dead. More people still play it than Left 4 Dead 2.

I presume they said it to provoke a reaction, as Civ5 is plainly very much alive, as the evidence proves!

I have not answered the poll, as I think there will be more DLCs AND an expansion.

Civ5 is most certainly not dead. There is a big playerbase and the developers continue to bring out new DLC.

Whether or not the game is as popular as other games, in either the series, the genre, or the entire market, is not entirely relevant to whether it's 'dead' or not. 'Dead' to me means dormant and unrecoverable. Given there is an imminent patch in the works, and given there is an active fanbase (as can be seen by the continued activity of this subforum; even if it isn't as high as other forums, it's still quite definitely active), I don't think it's really fair to be using the word 'dead'.

When they wanted me to pay to add to a game they 'forgot' to complete I was done. That said I think I understand the games mechanic very well.

But I agree with above post. Dead is a game that is forgotten and lost to the winds of time. This game is still actively being modding and updated. And you are talking about it...

Hmm, are those consistent numbers though? I've honestly not seen them that high since just after Civ5 was released. Civ4's Strategy and Tips and C&C forums almost always have more viewers, as does Civ3's C&C forum.

Personally, of all complaints, I don't understand those against the interface. It's way more comprehensible now, and less off-putting to newcomers. I have to say that when I went from civ2 to civ4, I had trouble understanding what everything meant for a while, and I actually had already seen other people playing it!
Sure, the ads on the right of the screen could use some work as to avoid the spam of useless information, and tell you other things that might interest you (maybe even have an option screen to choose your preferences), but that's about it.

And on Civ5, the game is far from dead. Most civ5 players would buy an expansion with their eyes closed, should it add gameplay options (as opposed to extra civs, for example); I don't think 2K games will ignore that.

The real issue with civ V interface is that it offers no good shortcuts for many actions and FORCES players to constantly navigate pop-up screens to get things done. It might be marginally more intuitive than civ IV UI to a rookie to both games, but you quickly realize that you can no longer add things to queue using keyboard shortcuts, or quickly rearrange tiles w/o going into the city screen and specifically allowing it, or waypointing units to convenient locations, etc.

But simply ordering a move with animations off on a machine above recommended specs, and then watching the game lag behind a human being's input capability is sour. The crummy programming and game speed (along with terrible MP) are the dominant reasons I do not play this game much. When I play a game I want to play it, not spend a significant portion of my time doing nothing while waiting for the game.

Not to forget the starving issue. Each time I go production focus the AI thinks its a good idea to starve instead of stagnation of slow growth.. just like in you're america video.

I would've said yes a week ago, but 2K Greg finally came out of his coma (basically no updates on Civ V since August) and said that there was a "big announcement" coming in the future, along with more patches, the DLL, and Pitboss. I'm guessing expansion pack, along with some DLC before that.

Pretty much this. The game will never be as good as Civ4, so why should anyone care?

I think the OP means 'still in development' rather than 'dead'. At least that seems the intention given the options in the poll.

I'd hope for an expansion, it would be a shame if they didn't make one.
I do expect there will be more DLC in the near future though.

DLC is the expansion. The next game, I'm thinking, will be a stand-alone. Not titled Civ5 of Civ6. We're looking at .5 incremental "advances". A true expansion will not yield unit sales like the stock game, so the investment is best spent on a new variation. DLC will continue for Civ5.

For me Civ 5 was "dead" from the first day, due to the perequisite of Steam.

But with the option "I only play Civ 4" the poll in my eyes is complete nonsense, as there are civers who prefer other versions of the civ series to Civ 4.

the diplomacy in CIV 5 is shocking, most of the option yield no or little effects on game play and it is often easy to predict actions of the ai, as there strategies vary little from leader to leader. and the game seems to have compromised game play for nice effects (i personally prefer civ iv over civ 5), they are constantly trying to fix the many many many bugs with in the game (see latest update) and it was a waste of 30 pound on my part, they have pulled dlc out which costs after a few months of release, until they fix this game, go with shogun or civ iv

Apart from grammar and spelling mistakes this individual hit it right on the nose. The developers of CiV, 2k and Firaxis, are being made a mockery of by Creative Assembly. Unless they do something and fast the game is dead. It is too bad to because it has a lot of potential. I love that line though, THE DIPLOMACY IS SHOCKING! After playing Total War you realize how bad CiV really is. The main thing to me is that Shogun 2 is a finished polished game, with an excellent AI. In comparison CiV is lacking, feels unfinished and has a terribly coded AI. CiV also lags graphically, while Shogun 2 plays smooth as silk even with ultra graphic settings. So is CiV dead? When compared to its competition it is dead in the water and sunk! Do I like CiV and want it fixed? God Damn right I do, this is not a CiV bashing post, because I do like the game. I have had fun at times playing it, but it is time they stopped wasting time and fix the damn game.

They're STILL doing this? Really? Do units given orders for "ranged attack" still move instead of attacking occasionally too?!

Failaxis it is then. Massed DLC patches while the governor can arbitrarily tile-swap to starve a city is not acceptable.
