I was thinking here... It's just my problem, my country's problem or... Democracy is obsolete?

I like freedom as much as the next guy, but frankly... Corruption and inefficiency are too high, at least where I live in (Brazil). Taxes are too high. I personally think that Democracy should either use modern technologies (Internet) to mordernize the rulling body and bring the rullers closer to the voters or it's going to be nothing but a obsolete governament of the past, like Communist. What do you all think?

EDIT: By "Democracy", I'm talking about the typical western Representative Democracy.

Let the government be ruled by the free market, particularly prediction markets as it's more efficient in making choices than popular opinion!

Democracy is not a unitary system. There are many different forms of democracy, and it is in fact different in every country, molded by prevailing institutions and socio-economic and historical conditions. In some places democracy work very well, in other places not so much. The solution is not obviously to get rid of democracy, not even in places where it isn't working very well.

When we are finally invaded by aliens, communism will be the way to go.

Because we need better draft powers.

They did it quite well during the American Civil War. And again during World War 2, though arguably less ruthlessly.

I don't live in a democracy.

@Zarn If your location is Antioch, and Turkey is a democracy, then you live in a democracy.

Wrong. ;)

Neither Turkey or the US is a democracy.

I will do my best to elaborate a little later in the thread if you want.

Democracy puts too much power into the hands of idiots

However, a dictatorship puts too much power into the hands of one psychopath.

But a leader is nessecary, leaving communism useless.

So either way you're firetrucked.

That is what Republics are for. The idiots you put in charge, don't stay forever. Checks and balances for both the government and the people.

Well I read the question as how is it to you and less specifically where you live and not in general, omg lets have commie revolution everywhere.

Democracy in Americamore or less works for most Americans but for me, not so much.

I agree with azzaman's post. :)

I do think some somewhat related systems humans have already thought about COULD be better in some conditions though, but the attempt to change will create more problems than benefits. Thus, ATM, it's definitely the way to go.

IMO, any exaggeration in any side (authoritarian state or direct democracy) is not good at all.

Note: I do not think monarchies contradict the idea of a democracy, just as well as republics don't imply a democracy.

Bah, who said communism is dead? I'm not so familiar with the philosophy, but marxism borders closer to socialism, and Russia's USSR was an adaptation of that.

Anyway, democracy (essentially call it republic) is best.

Democracy has never been optimal. A Constitutional Republics is the perfect balance between personal involvement and protection from tyranny of the masses.
