Its probably clear in the title but what I mean is will the US ever split into several different nations in the far (or near) future. E.g An independent California or several smaller states grouping together to form a new nation.

I think it is possible but would probably require some sort of large event to happen. Just want to know what everyone thinks.;)

Buggered if I know.

Rather unlikely I guess (at least in the near future).

There wasn't a breakdown when the Cold War ended
(the ugly red beast was suddenly a friend).

I predict Texas to be the first to cecede. Who's going to argue with the big 'T'? ;)

Nothing lasts forever. The US will disapear someday, and new countries will take its place. But I dont think that some or all the states will send a letter to washington saying "Oregon has declared independence". In other words, the US will eventually seperate, but not directly.

Right now, it is unlikely. The vast majority of all the regions of the US enjoy their membership of the union, accept federal authority and have no design to leave. Everything must come to an end, but the US doesn't seem near it.

If the US were to break up, it likely that it would due to some great major upheaval that would be worldwide in extent (e.g. prolonged depression, a new world war, severe climatic change, etc.). For what it worth, I predict the first major break in the US would be the Western states vs. the Eastern states.

USA splitting up? Not possible in the near future, I think. I do not recall hearing about demonstrations in the streets of Los Angeles (or Seattle, or What-Is-The-Capital-Of-Texas-Called) for the case of independence from Washington. There are no independent movements there... why should it split? .

Eventually, but I'll be long dead by the time it happens.

Just like most of the people here have said, I, too, think that the US seems fairly stable, as a nation. I'm thinking it would take a huge world war where the mainland US is invaded and a war is actually fought on mainland US soil. When that happens (and if the land and cities are laid to waste because of it,) the US will be split up.

Much more likely it will join something bigger.

I think that California is going to break off, float over to Hawaii and hang out in the Pacific.

Alaska can come too.

I'm not so sure if we will see a permanent breakup for many years. China is more than 2000 years old and still going strong.

Of course. Sooner rather than later. I never would have thought that before 9/11, but after seeing the immediate aftermath of two buildings being knocked down, its pretty obvious.

Well events like 9/11 and following can also have an unifying effect on a nation. Everbody have an opinion about them, and many also have stories to tell. Two americans that previously didn't have anything to talk about may now have new opinions to exchange.

US can most certainly live long and prosperous. Even if you subscribe to the model of countries being like humans, growing old and dying, US is still a young nation.

If a political divide were to share borders with regions then I guess it could develop into some kind of split. Two other concerns are the influx of spanish-speaking immigrants to south US and if a surge in transportation costs were to lower the mobility to such extent that regional 'cultures' would become more distinguished.

Oh I am very positive that it will happen, however I don't know when or what we will split up over.
