My free Windows 7 upgrade disk just came in the mail today and I have to ask, is it really worth it to upgrade to 7 from Vista? Have they really made 7 much better than Vista? Also how glitchy is 7 right now?

If you got it for free: yes, its worth it. And so far, in more than 6 months of running it, Ive had no issues.

If you got a free upgrade, I'd say go for it. I wouldn't spend money to upgrade a working Vista system, but then, I wouldn't spend money to install any Windows. ;)

My understanding is that the Vista --> Win7 upgrade is relatively painless, and that Win7 is a much better version than Vista.

Windows 7 is handsdown the best proprietary OS out right now. If you can upgrade to it for free (or in my case $30), do so.

Vista -> 7 for free = yes

I like Windows 7 a lot but I will be going back to XP because I am using 4 GB of RAM and the overhead of Windows 7 is a little too high when playing mods like RoM for Civ4. I am keeping Windows 7 (Professional) on my laptop though. I got it for free through my school (MSDNAA).

Windows 7 releases memory as needed. Zelig already talked about this a long time ago: You're not using the memory, so why not let the OS use it for something. And when you do need it, its released to you. Windows 7 improved a lot over Vista in that sense. Windows 7 could be using almost 2 GB of RAM when my pc is idle, but as soon as I run an app that needs 7.5GB, bam, 1.5GB of the memory is released to me, on top of the 6GB that were already idle.

In other words, your reason for going back to XP is bull. If it seems that programs slow down, check other factors too.

What are the main advantages of going from XP to 7? Would I expect a games perfomance increase?

If your hardware components support 64bit addressing, and if find yourself frequently running out of memory on your current computer, go for the upgrade. Otherwise i would wait until you buy a new machine.

Windows 7 is a thousand times better than Vista upon release. If you have vista there isn't any reason NOT to upgrade.

Except, you know, not having the money to do it.

Okay one good reason.

Although check Microsoft's website, they have deals for students and people upgrading from Vista. Plus if you bought a vista computer in the last several months the manufacturer should provide you with a free (or almost free, Toshiba charges $20 USD in shipping, cheap beepers) upgrade to Windows 7.

And if you're a college student, check with your school. Mine is providing me with a free copy of Win 7 Pro (amongst other software like VS2010, Office and other big expensive MS programs)

So very much this.
